Class of 2020

Recommended Posts

I am wondering what a typical accepted student looks like. I am looking to apply before August 2017 for the 2018 school year.

My overall GPA is less than stellar at a 3.125, but I am hoping I can bring it up.

I only have 500 hours of Direct Patient Care, but am currently still working as a PCA, so that number will continue to go up.

I have a ton of volunteer hours, but not sure of an exact number.

No shadowing hours yet, but plan to get those during this summer term.

@Badgers I read your reply since it came to my email. UAB is my top choice, but will be applying to 3 other schools, as well. Do you think it's worth it to apply with a low GPA? I'm just not sure what they look at the most: GPA or HCE, or are they pretty equal with one another?

UAB Undergrad here. UAB is also my top (and only) choice for the 2017-18 cycle. I'm good friends with admissions folks here, and I can tell you all that this is a very holistic program as far as admissions considerations, which I love. Its a great program with great stats, but with fewer requirements than some of the other programs around the southeast (which, funny enough, have stricter requirements and aren't as well-ranked per USN&WR. Ironic, huh?). The big things that UAB considers, naturally, are GPA/academics, experience, your references, and your personal statement. They weigh slightly differently, I'm sure, but high marks/scores in one should outweigh other lower marks, it seems.

Hey! Since you are at UAB, maybe you would be able to answer a Q that it's been hard to get a straight answer to. Does UAB  accept AP credits for, say, Bio if you have more upper-level Bio credits to make up for those that are AP?

Have you not tired to contact the school to ask? JMHO, but I would think the program would have contacted you if you had something missing.  Did you receive the email stating  your Overall GPA and Science GPA meet the minimum requirement and the email stating you are under review once they receive your supplemental application?

If you're talking about PA school, I don't think AP credits apply or weigh any more heavily for you than a normal course. Whatever prerequisites UAB has are required regardless. Not sure about credits for CLEPs, but as far as AP, I am pretty sure any AP course would go in normally..?

If you're talking about high school, I think UAB as an institution DOES accept high school AP credits. Try calling the Financial Aid office for the status of that!
