CASPA Experience section

Recommended Posts

Hi, I saw on a YouTube video that someone suggested to describe the experience and include a brief explanation of what they also learned from that experience.

example: experience is a CNA, and along with describing the job duties, you would include how you learend to work with different personalities and work in a team better.

Let me know what you guys think of this! Is it unnecessary and eye-rolling to the adcom or would it 'stand out'?

Unnecessary IMO. They read hundreds, if not thousands of applications each cycle. That section is more for quantifying your time with patients. They more or less know all of the job responsibilities of the various HCE job titles. If you really want to describe them briefly, talk about what you gained from the experience in your PS.

I actually provided a brief description and the meaning of the work for me. For me, it was important that my experiences didn't read like a generic laundry list and that I personalized each experience. Ex: I served on the executive board of a student group just like many other candidates, but my experience was not the same and even my duties. I was a scribe but not all scribes have the same roles and responsibilities (ex: for my company the scribes in one state could input doctors orders whereas some others could not). My application is the one place adcoms really get to learn about me and what I actually did. Whose job was it to tell them? Mine! It's not the adcoms job to use their imagination. If I didn't give them a good idea of who I was, they wouldn't have been interested in meeting me. It worked out well for me as the adcom with which I interviewed thoroughly read my application and frequently referred to it. This process can be overwhelming and this forum has loads of information but never be afraid to do what you think is best for your application. Good luck!

Is it necessary to include all work experiences? For example, I picked up some odd jobs here and there for a few months at a time just to make extra cash, but they were not medically related at all (I worked at a coffee shop and picked up some hours at my husband's workplace).

You don't HAVE to include every job you've ever worked. I am one of those people who always has multiple jobs and one of my part time jobs was only for like 7 weeks before I moved cities. I don't put that job on resumes and definitely didn't bother putting it on my CASPA. It's good to put all HCE jobs and any jobs that you've been at for a good length of time though (I'd say probably >6months if not HCE-related but this is up to you) even if they're not medically related. It helps show other areas of interest or experiences that make you unique as an applicant and can demonstrate you ability to juggle multiple commitments at once.
