Would you pay for a rotation?

Recommended Posts

In a couple of months I have to decide if I want to go on a 4 week rotation at a prestigious hospital out of state for a unique rotation that I would not be able to do otherwise. The only thing is I would have to pay essential $2100 for living expenses and insurance while I'm there. Is it worth it? Or should I just try to find a rotation near where I live.

There's a big difference between 'paying for a rotation' and 'paying for living expenses'.  A lot of programs don't even offer housing when placing students at away rotations and expect that they will have to deal with the costs on their own.  This isn't a big deal nor is it a deal breaker.  If it's a rotation you want to do, do it.  If you can't afford it, don't.

We had to pay rent for the month we stayed in shared apartments on our away rotations. Much more reasonable than $2100 b/c they were rural rotations, but this was something we were told from the beginning. I wouldn't pay a hospital or a clinician for a rotation, that's just abusive, but living expenses, that's up to you (time value of money, cost/benefit, etc.).

The wording on your post title is misleading. It's perfectly acceptable to have to pay for living expenses while away on rotation.  If it's an area of medicine you're interested in, a hospital system you might want to work in, or something that is just of general interest and you can afford the extra expense, then go for it.
