Failed PANCE 2 x's, now passed - what to say at an interview

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I am a recent grad who took the PANCE twice and failed, but just found out yesterday that I rocked it and passed!

A few questions:

1) Recommendations on what to say at my interview?  Do I say that I failed? I'm looking for suggestions on phrasing or things that look enticing and not off putting to an employer.

2) Are my employers able to see that failed twice through my licensing with the medical board?

Thanks for the help - much appreciated!

I don't even know how they could find out you failed it before. Don't mention it. You're in. If it's the time gap between graduating and applying for jobs that you need to explain, just say you needed some time off after school. Most employers skim resumes anyway, they aren't adding up six months here and there. Congrats!

I had a question on my post-hiring/credentialing paperwork that asked specifically whether I had ever failed a certification exam.  Then to attach a paragraph explaining why.

Also had to explain any and all employment gaps of more than 3 months since starting the medical career.

I work in a hospital though, and we have a residency program, so they do love the red tape.  I doubt that you would have this in an office environment, or maybe even many hospitals.

You can be vague without borrowing trouble.  Since the voluntary time-off gap thing applied to me, I can tell you that the job market went into a coma during the holidays.  After I got the Silly Season out of the way, I hit the bricks hard and found the system didn't start to really wake up until late February.  You could mention that.

There IS a line on the NCCPA request form to have your attempt history sent out.  If they knew about it, they could conceivably ask you to have that sent.

Good luck; that's quite a setback mentally that you have gotten through.
