Requesting admin time

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Quick question: Is it appropriate to request a 4.5 day work week via 1/2 day dedicated admin time? Or does that come off as being lazy?

I recently accepted a new position at a private practice ENT clinic. Clinic is open from 8-5 with an hour of lunch each day. I am the first non-physician provider the group has ever had, so it’s a new situation for everyone. The salary and benefits are all pretty good. My question revolves around scheduling. My schedule is completely up in the air. I am in training for 1-2 months and then I will start seeing patients on my own. I will also assist in occasional surgeries if I can bill for them in addition to the doc.

Given that the schedule has yet to be determined, would it be appropriate to request to build my schedule with ½ admin time built in (that could be done at home or at the office)? The group I’m working for is notorious for staying much later than normal clinic hours, so I would greatly cherish a secure ½ day of time to take care of charts or other errands, etc.

Thanks!

I would say max of 7 clinical hours in an 8 hours day (and you MUST take you 1 hour lunch 0- DONT work thought it.... that is giving your labor away for free!)

Most docs work a 4 day work week so they are used to hearing it!

Offer a 4 day work week, for full time pay and bennies.... it is logical and easy that wa

Many medical organizations are going to 4 day work weeks. It is mentally healthier and they find their providers more productive and engaged.

ALL medical practice should employ NON patient time - it only makes sense. Not everything is 100% patient encounter.

There are forms and clinic notes and refills and phone calls......... If you have a 10 hour work day then only 7 should be patient - one hour for lunch and 2 hours for admin/notes, etc.

I struggle with this now and every employer wants more for less.

To keep sanity, clarity and happiness - there has to be division between responsibilities and adequate time for those tasks.

Unfortunately another reason very few want to be in Primary Care.
