Online Prerequisites Through Doane University

If anybody is in need of prerequisites and are interested in taking them online, may I strongly suggest Doane University. I am about to finish up Biochemistry and it has been a great experience. The course is designed to ensure that you learn the material and is very hands on. Each week you have a list of assignments due that are very practical and very from week to week. I took organic through University of New England and it was literally like being thrown to the wolves. The lecture was a guy talking over his powerpoint and thats it. Doane is doing it right and it is the same price as UNE. Definitely the better option.

What about labs? As far as I know, most PA programs require a lab to be done in person

Mooredc, did you take any online classes prior to taking the ones offered by UNE and have previous coursework in the physical sciences in the traditional setting?  I have heard that UNE is pretty much all teach yourself and that the final exams weight for a large percentage of your overall grade.  I only ask because as a full-time paramedic and parent, I was looking into the UNE courses to fulfill a few pre-req's that were not part of my BS in Health Science degree in order to prepare for applying to a local PA program.

I took two science courses through UNE online.

 

It definitely took a lot of self-discipline and determination, but totally doable. However, I had taken a large amount of physical science courses in the typical classroom setting already. It was also awesome that you could finish the online courses as quickly as you wanted...

Trying to get in touch with OP, but if anyone else ends up taking this course or has please let me know how it is/was! I was going to just avoid biochemistry altogether since it's not a prerequisite for my state schools, but if this course is better than UNE's I might reconsider taking it.

@mooredc did you take, or know anyone who has taken, Human Anatomy I and II at Doane University? Or have you taken any other courses at Doane besides Biochemistry? If so, what was it like? How many exams were there? 

I've obtained my Bachelor's degree in the past and I need to complete a few other prerequisites in order to be eligible to apply to Physician Assisting programs and I've heard great things about Doane. I currently work full time so online classes are the most ideal due to the flexibility.

I took biochem, micro, and A&P I and II. Disclaimer - I only did this because my classes were "barely" 5 years old, and I'm applying to a program that actually stated they don't care if your classes were taken online or not. So, with the exception of these "expired" classes, I was already a competitive applicant.

 I feel like the classes were really doable, some of it feels like a continuous slog, it's a lot of assignments (at one point I did take three classes, though, so that may have been on me). I did a lot more writing than I expected to for science classes, but I get that's part of the online format, also get ready to film yourself for some assignments. 

I had a lot of prejudices around online classes before I took these, mainly I was wondering whether I was just buying a grade - but from a facebook group that some of my classmates started it seemed like a lot of people were straight up failing. So, I took them, got As, and am applying this cycle to my one program. Feel free to ask anything else.

Hello I am pre PA and am planning on applying to a PA program in April 2020 preferably within my home state. I was stunned when I realized that I am currently missing  a microbiology course with lab and A&P I-II with lab, which almost all PA programs require. I was initially a pre med student and didn't require those classes at the time. I am desperately looking into classes now and have not seen any available A&P classes with lab offered during the winter sessions. I am considering taking it at the local community college near me for the spring semester, which I would have to attend and take time off of work for, which is really starting to make applying in spring 2020 less feasible especially if I have to take the A&P classes sequentially and they are only offered during Spring or Fall.  I stumbled across Doane, which offers online courses and seemed like a reasonable option. Is this class straight forward or will I be struggling to communicate with professors and wasting my money and time? I am very crest fallen at this point as I am already in a gap year and putting off until the next cycle would set me back further. I feel lost and a, considering another pathway. Please help.

I would use a bit of caution taking online courses for pre-reqs. I used Doane and found the courses to be high school level at best. If you want a GPA booster then here you go, but you may pay for it when you get to grad school. I had taken these courses before and needed to refresh before applying to PA schools. I would advise taking any science courses ( take psy and med term online) at a physical university with resources, actual cadaver lab. Many schools are not accepting science courses taken online because they are an easy way to bump your GPA.  Online can be great if YOU do the work, but it is very easy to coast and gain little more than tuition bill on the other side. Figured I would play devils advocate.

Doane is an awesome school. The online courses will transfer, so don't worry about that. The only thing that sucks about Doane is how expensive it is.

Question? I am looking to take the Online Anatomy and Physiology through Doane. I live in Germany and I am not allowed to receive animal based contents through the mail. German customs will stop it. So, receiving a LAB Kit with animal based contents for dissection is out of my reach in Germany. Does Doane online Anatomy and Physiology classes require a Lab Kit with those animal based contents  such hearts or animals for dissection. Thank you.
