I apply to PA this year and am looking at a psych fellowship. I know the USPHS has positions and they'll waive my age and service time to become a USPHS officer if I agree to go to Rosebud or Pine Ridge, South Dakota or Winnebago, Nebraska. I also know there are jobs in the federal gubment. I want to know from those here how they like it or dislike it.Naturally my preference is being accepted for the Navy HSCP and get paid to go to school, go in as an officer and retire after 10 years...but if I have to take a different route to get back in uniform ala psych residency then I'll do that. Be very cautious, the PHS is very difficult to join if you have a good amount of prior military service as can the Coast Guard. Croooz Posted February 10, 2017 Author Share Posted February 10, 2017 Yeah I spoke to the USPHS recruiter about joining as a RN. She said no on three levels. One I was too old, two; over eight years active duty, and three didn't already have the qualifying degree. She said if I was a physician or a PA with psychiatry experience/residency then it would be different because they are severely undermanned. Besides with the PHS I would probably just do 30 since there isn't any op tempo to speak of, so they would get their twenty from me. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Seriously regretting this decision but stay for only the pension and at times I am beginning to think it’s not worth it. About 5 months into job they told me I would be on call or mandate list and be expected to cover for RN’s and do the RN job and also got stuck on an RN holiday rotation. Not told This when was hired. I have had multiple talks with HR and Health care manager. Looking into transferring to another institution that does not have to do RN sick call which means covering repeated shifts for nurses that call in and doing their holidays. So frustrating. If you wanna be a nurse this is the job for you. In the process of making a major life changing decision. There are other fed institutions that don’t have to do all this the RN sick call and holiday rotation so that is what I am going to do is transfer if able to if not I will be looking for a real PA job not a nurse job. these federal institutions are all run by union so it’s almost impossible to get anything changed ? pafrankc Posted April 7, 2018 Share Posted April 7, 2018 There are also PAs that work for the State Department and civil service (most aspects of healthcare) at most, if not all, military facilities.
