Good Trauma offer in *cringe* Florida?

Recommended Posts

I will be quick. New grad, but with 6+ years experience as a dietitian (do realize not completely relevant job experience). Was offered trauma position, hired by hospital, that will consist of mainly OR work in Central Florida (near Tampa). Practice has 5 NPs.

Offered salary of 86, I came back asking for 93 (COL is not bad, 1300/mo for 2/2 nicest apartment in area)

Raises are based on hospital performance, can be 2, 3, 4% (not a fan of this aspect)

As of now, no call. Planning on adding this in the future but when this starts we will be paid for it

3K for relocation

3K for CMEs

Benefits start 1 month after starting

Complete health insurance (medical, dental, vision)

401k

Malpractice covered

25 days PTO built over time, can roll over or can receive as payment at end of year

Trauma position for new grad is difficult to come by here and that is my passion. Is this a decent offer? I don't want to be pushy, I realize this is new grads biggest downfall. If they come back offering 93 or slightly under can I continue to negotiate? I plan on having an attorney review the contract once given to me.

Advice? Thank you!!

3K for CMEs - - - you control how spent

Benefits start 1 month after starting ---reasonable

Complete health insurance (medical, dental, vision) - --  ensure that this is in writing and that there is ZERO employee contribution - there is likely some employee contribution that they are not telling you.  Ask them "If I had a family fo 4 mow much does my health insurance cost per month or per paycheck."

401k - should have a match

Malpractice covered--and tail??

25 days PTO built over time, can roll over or can receive as payment at end of year--this is pretty low if it includes holiday and CME - typically 10+ holidays a year, 5 days CME, 3-5 sick and personal, and 3+ vacation as a bare minimum

BIGGEST issues

what is your expected work week - # hours?  86k for 100 hours a week is horrid, 86k for a 40 hour week is okay - how do they handle hours you work over 40 - this is a big deal, resident work 80 and if you are expected to do the same that is a no go......

What ar doc's like - mentoring??

Admittedly, I am only a PA student, but pretty well versed in the Tampa area. My old army buddy lives there and I visit very frequently.  1300/month most likely not going to get you a two bedroom in the nicest parts of Tampa. If your job is at TGH and want to live close (Davis Island/Channelside) it will be more than that, for nice apartment anyways.

Depending where you are at it is doable.  In the Tampa area the only Trauma Centers (and I would think thus the Trauma Services) would be TGH, St. JOes (level 2 I think or maybe just has trauma Service) and Bayfront in St. Pete.  You did not mention pediatrics so I will tx it as adult.  Otherwise you are referring to Bayonet Point in Pasco which is a level II if I recall correctly.  I just took a job with TGH ER so the 1300 for 2/2 for "nicest in the area" is not going to be IN Tampa.  St. Pete would be unlikely also as that would be Downtown St. Pete and that is basically the same if not more than the Bayshore/Harbour Island/South Tampa area.  St Joes would have something but that may not be the area you want (I am from Tampa and as I said am moving back in about 2 days) as it can be rather shady in that area.  Pasco those prices make sense.  Not exactly the best area if you are a young professional and want a nightlife.  Anyway, it is an okay deal if you are set to go into Trauma but depending on where you will be living or want to live it may be a bit tight.  Good luck
