nixietink
Hi all! The PAs in my ortho practice and I are renegotiating our call pay. It hasn't been adjusted in 3+ years and we are in the Bay Area of CA where cost of living continues to rise. recently we've been asked to take more call days and we are now first call every day instead second. During the week call is mainly phone. Patients and nurses can call us at anytime during the evening and night. Plus we are expected to come in for any cases. We don't do any consults. Weekend call is phone, cases, plus we have to come to the hospital to round and discharge. Right now we get a flat rate of $150 per day of call no matter if it's weekday or weekend. We get compensated per each additional case we do though. This is probably a loaded question but what's a fair rate for call? Not sure an hourly rate is possible since we are salary. Would appreciate any advice!!
Moderator ventana Posted January 8, 2017 Moderator Share Posted January 8, 2017 I get $100 per day for telephone call in Massachusetts - COLA pretty reasonable in comparison to bay area
nixietink
Anyone else have any advice? I think it's really the weekend call that needs negotiation.
Matt82
AAPA salary report has detailed info in call pay. Do you have access to that?
SedRate
Consider joining PAOS. They offer a salary report that includes call pay. I don't have direct experience with call pay myself since I don't take call, but first call should pay more than second call. Usually weekend call pays more. Some PAs do a weekend rate, e.g., $500 per weekend. If they are requiring you to do more work aka take more call, that is another negotiating factor to use to ask for more pay. Good luck!
