kraftycub34
Hello everyone! I was pondering a question regarding the different types of GPAs CASPA lists and which ones do admissions committees look at for applicants? I know many places say science GPA flat out but I've heard of people saying overall GPA, or in other cases use the term "non science GPA". Both of which seem to have their own category. Any insight from individuals who have served on admissions committees is welcomed!
Administrator rev ronin Posted December 9, 2016 Administrator Share Posted December 9, 2016 Here's what I have seen looked at: * Cumulative undergraduate GPA * Science GPA * BCP GPA * Last X hours GPA, on schools that look at it. Here's what I've never seen really looked at and called out: * Cumulative GPA (graduate included) * non-science GPA
MT2PA
And there's no one size fits all. Every program can kind of use what they want. I would say the majority use cum undergrad and/or sGPA in some fashion.
ilygurlie
I thought most programs use the science gpa calculated by CASPA (which is essentially BCP gpa).
Administrator rev ronin Posted December 9, 2016 Administrator Share Posted December 9, 2016 I thought most programs use the science gpa calculated by CASPA (which is essentially BCP gpa). Cumulative science and BCP are both calculated by CASPA. BCP is the more specific score, only including biology, chemistry, and physics (hence the name), and programs may decide to look at that score as opposed to total science. ilygurlie
^Ah okay, thank you. So the science gpa would include math courses?
Administrator rev ronin Posted December 9, 2016 Administrator Share Posted December 9, 2016 ^Ah okay, thank you. So the science gpa would include math courses? Yes, and things like (off the top of my head here, see the CASPA website for actual topics) physical anthropology, astronomy, and the like. Rhizopus
Math actually counts as a non-science class and thus wouldn't be calculated into the science GPA. It certainly seems like it should, but it doesn't. https://portal.caspaonline.org/caspaHelpPages/frequently-asked-questions/academic-history/course-subjects/index.html
