New grad ER offer

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've recently been offered a part time position in the ER. I did my last clinical rotation here and loved it although would like to hear your thoughts on the offer.

- $65/hr

- 80hrs a month

- Malpractice & tail

- No benefits

During my rotation the medical director told me that $80/hr without benefits and $65/hr with benefits was the norm. So not sure what is fair. My friend got offered $65/hr as well at a different ER in the same city.

It's decent. For a new grad.

How are you going to make 80hrs a month though? Do you work elsewhere? Which specialty?

I do have an interview for another ER position. I'll see what they come up with but would like to to part time at both places for the time being. Money will be the same (friend got a job there aswell) and It's emergency medicine. I was told with this offer that as soon as the hours increase I can switch to full time.

The reason why I asked if you had another gig was mainly to see if it was going to be a good deal w/o benefits.

Now that I know you are planning on part-time only jobs, you might wanna consider ther idea of having a job that GIVES you benefits.

- Unless you're wealthy, you will need a retirement package to help you tackle the rising cost of living after retirement... not just you but YOUR family too! + the FREE money!!!

- Even though as a PT you will be able to make up your own schedules and plan vacations accordingly, but why not get paid for taking vacations?  You NEED PTO

- I don't know about you, or your family, but you/they WILL get sick. and being in the health field, you know their bills aren't cheap. So, you need Medical/Dental/Vision

- CMEs/professional memberships/license renewal/DEA license aren't cheap... Why not have someone else pay for them?

Now, I am not saying you shouldn't do part time, what I am saying is, receiving benefits from an employer make life a whole lot easier.

On the other hand, I know a PA who works 4 (FOUR) jobs  (2 ER, 1 UC, 1 housecall) he claims to make approx 300K yearly. According to him, when you make that much, you can give yourself your OWN benefits, however you HAVE to work like a dog.  He only works 4 days a week,  takes 3 days to rest.
