Is there anyone else considering the NAPA Track at ATSU?

Recommended Posts

I am considering applying for the regular PA program and the Native American Physician Assistant (NAPA) Track at ATSU.

Does anyone know current students in the NAPA track already, or is any considering applying? I am trying to weigh pros and cons. Thoughts and opinions would be much appreciated.

I too am considering the NAPA track. When I talked to the current students during my interview they said there were 2-3 people on it, but I did not get an opportunity to speak with them. I am concerned about the requirements: 1) Be of American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian descent 2) Demonstrate involvement in their Native community. My family is of AI descent but I have no proof other than family verbal histories and pictures and I'm not directly involved in a Native community. The staff told me to mention my desire to join the NAPA track at orientation and they'll provide more information as to how we can go about it.

As for pros and cons, the big difference will be in clinical experiences. According to the ATSU site: During the 12-month clinical component of the NAPA track, students complete several rotations at tribal clinics, Indian Health Service hospitals, rural and/or underserved facilities which serve indigenous communities. So what that says to me is there won't really be much 'urban' experience. I could be wrong on that but I feel like the rotations will be primarily on tribal lands. If you are interested in working in a 'traditional environment' vs. rural/underserved the experience during the NAPA track may not be as advantageous. I seriously have no clue though and am very interested in hearing from people with NAPA experiences.

Thank you for starting this thread!

During my interview with the staff and with Mr. Goodwin they all said it was primarily 'for' AI students. Although this was not necessarily a disqualifier for the NAPA track and to make sure to mention it during orientation. Thanks for the comment Lianne, we'll find out more on June 6th!

I'd love for current/past students on the NAPA track to fill in our blanks :=D:

I hope someone will eventually fill in the blanks. I just really want to know if I am a good fit for this program, and vice versa. I lived in the area when I was young and I was a patient a few times in the tribal facilities. I've had some okay experiences in the past, but I've heard some very negative things as well. I know it's not fair to judge all facilities according to my experience. In fact, I just recently visited a hospital for my sister to have her gallbladder removed, and seeing her go through this particular facility impressed me. They did a very good job.

My other concern is that I like to work with all minority groups, not just Native. Looking over the curriculum, I think it would be a shame to have to take the Spanish classes and not have an opportunity to use them.
