APrice09
I've heard rumors of there being fellowship/residency programs for PA's post-graduation....A PA that I work with said he has a friend going through one in TX. Wanted to know if anyone out there has heard of this and if it is true? Would love any insight.
OneDayAPA_Maybe
I did a quick check on the Association of Postgraduate PA Programs and didn't see anything listed. The only thing I know of that exists in Texas that might be what your friend is referencing is a program in Houston to become an Anesthesiologist Assistant. Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 6, 2017 Moderator Share Posted November 6, 2017 there are no PA postgrad programs in anesthesia. the non-physician, non-crna route is AA as listed in the post above.
narcan
Too bad. Anesthesia is fun stuff.
ProSpectre
On the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants (AASPA) website, they mention that PAs working in anesthesia perform the same duties as CRNAs. Is there any truth to this? I have heard of PAs working in anesthesia, but was unsure of the specific duties performed. http://www.aaspa.com/surgical-pa-specialties/anesthesia
Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 26, 2017 Moderator Share Posted November 26, 2017 there are very few PAs providing operative anesthesia. most were trained in surgical pa residency programs > 30 years ago. Shep Stone is the best known of these PAs. There is no current mechanism other than an AA program for a PA to learn to deliver operative anesthesia. there are "anesthesia" jobs listed for PAs currently that amount to little more than doing preop and postop H+Ps. surgblumm
I have known General Shep Stone from Yale for more than thirty years as he was a groundbreaker, a military hero, and the most excellent PA Anesthesiologist that I have ever encountered. Eric is so correct concerning these supposed job offers which are H&P jobs and post-anesthesia rounds. If you really want this you will need to attend the same two-year program as a CRNA and get credentialed from that school and find the appropriate hospital that will hire you as a PA Anesthesiologist. It's nice to be among the few.
