So i have an upcoming school interview.  What is the current thoughts on wearing dress uniform to the school interview?  The school is civilian.  I plan on commissioning (currently enlisted) directly after school.  Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

Don't. Wear a nice suit.

I would like to hear your reasoning on this. I absolutely plan to wear my dress blues to my residency interview, but if he's enlisted navy they might not know the Cracker Jack uniform is dress wear. Other branches it's easier to tell.

Honestly I think it's best to interview in what you are comfortable in. If you feel more natural in a suit, by all means.

You are more than your military service. You have worked hard ro get your PA school interview on your own merits. While your service is an important part of your experience, it is only a portion of what you are.

They are not interviewing you because you're a vet, they're interviewing you to see if you'll be a good fit for the program.

I still have my uniforms folded neatly in my seabag. I have all my fruit salad in a nice display case. I see no reason to wear them. They want you, not your uniform.

Plus, as you'll see after you've been out a while, by and large, no one cares.

I've seen PAs come for job interviews in dress blues and get hired immediately over other candidates. Civilians are impressed. Even subconsciously. A vet might ask why you wore it, just be prepared with a good answer. You can always say it gets on you the airplane first and TSA precheck and you are leaving right after the interview.

I was already retired when I interviewed but I would not have worn my uniform regardless. I am sure that your application gives your military service prominent coverage. I had a friend who was still in when he interviewed, he chose to wear a suit. I will say I think that appearance is important at the interview. I was really worried I would be over dressed but, I was not. There were several folks who for what ever reason did not wear business attire. They really stood out. I am sure you look sharp in your uniform. The program wants to know you can look like a civilian professional as well. Good luck what ever choice you make.

Applying job interview techniques written a general rule to be applied to all transitioning devices members is a bit comparing apples to oranges.

Granted, they aren't going to let him in just on his service, but service is apart of the package. It sets him apart from the wet behind the ears new grad with a 4.0 GPA In biochemistry. They aren't interviewing 20 people, they are interviewing several hundred. I see wearing a uniform as a possible positive as standing out from the crowd. Is it necessary? No, it's going to be written all over the resume. But I don't see much downside either unless you're in front of some liberal nut that hates the military, in which case I wouldn't be at a program that couldn't separate the service member from politics.

Anyway, I still say if you are comfortable in the uniform, go for it. If not, don't. I've known several GMOs who went to residency interviews in uniform and plenty that didn't. All got in.

Bear in mind I will still be active duty while in school and plan commissioning after school. I will stay active duty the entire time. My thoughts are since I am, will be active duty wear my uniform. This program is specifically recruiting military medics and corpsman. Also my uniform is a chief petty officer uniform. It's the suit and tie dress uniform.

You can wear anything you want to an interview, including shorts, T-shirt and sandals. Just remember that part of the interview is to evaluate how you handle yourself as a professional. That includes, how you present yourself. If you dont shave, wear board shorts, have full body tattoos and lots of facial piercings, that's one image. I would recommend a more professional look. But that's just me. A suit or even a collegiate look ( nice slacks, shirt and tie and jacket can be fine). Consider the weather and location. Can't help you ladies. I know what looks professional but probably couldn't describe it. Just avoid excessive bling, anything provacative or too much make up.

I would have to say I would go with the suit. I was a MSgt in the AF Reserves when i interviewed for PA school a few years ago. Wearing my dress blues never crossed my mind. My military service was well documented in my application as well as my deployment. So, the admissions committee knew all about my 10 years of service.

And I must say, having military service can be a double edged sword. Not every one supports the military and what we do. and while they might not openly admit it, they may silently use it against you in an application process. i hate to think that it happens but I'm a realist and think that it probably does. so i think the suit was the right option.
