If the AAPA did move forward with a new certifying body...

Recommended Posts

Would that not be a tremendous opportunity to fix many issues with our profession/professional title?

In the name change discussions, the large impeding factor I see mentioned often is that "all the laws" on the books and certifying language name Physician Assistant, and would require writing additional language to include; for example, the title of Physician Associate. But if a new certifying body were to come about, would it not be much easier/great oppertunity to use Physician Associate in the language at the time of its creation? Fixing the "assistant" title. Maybe this could move us more in-line with NPs in other areas too, such as stipulations for primary care independence after X years practice and an exam.

Just some thoughts...

I agree that there lies a great opportunity here.

However, I do not think the masses of PAs are being heard. I see this as two CEOs/Boards having a grudge/power match and we are still just in the cheap seats watching.

I have complained, suggested, advocated and pleaded for board question issues for 25 years to no avail. Not even so much as a thank you, kiss my butt email reply.

Not all 108,000 PAs in the US are represented by AAPA - look at their membership numbers - but all of us are certified through NCCPA. Many PAs have steered away from AAPA over the years due to a perception of little return for $250 or whatever a year in membership. Too national, not local enough, not visible enough, no tangible results that affect my daily life, etc. Some members sign up only for the CME and better program rates.

IF NCCPA put this to a majority rules vote of board certified PAs and not through their wishy washy namby pamby focus groups and "public input" (WTH?) then we might actually get something that reflects what we do.

AAPA membership is not required. NCCPA certification IS.

In my solo opinion, NCCPA is the one who dropped the ball and might not even know there is a ball in this issue.

WE ARE CERTIFIED PAs - WE SHOULD GET FULL SAY IN THIS PROCESS OF CERTIFICATION. Yet, no one listens...................................

My old cranky 2 cents.

I agree totally.

I am an AAPA student member, as I figure most PA students are. I'm sure membership renewal drops sharply after graduation (when the rates go up and loans loom large). I would like to believe that the more PAs whom join the AAPA, the stronger and more directed the organization representing them can become.

Of course they're never going to be able to come in line with everyones' idea of what is "right" for our profession or what we need. Everyone needs something a little different. But I will say that over my (almost) three years here now, the major complaint I saw about the AAPA was their milquetoast nature in dealing with the future of our profession. It seems like now they've actually taken a stand on something that a large numbers of PAs see as undesirable for us, and (hopefully) plan to follow through on their words.

If they can afford to do so, I encourage all PA students to join both the AAPA and their respective state chapters. These are organizations that exist for us, but we don't have to join them. They aren't required for practice in our profession. But I think that we can empower them to be our public, vocal advocates. This could be a sea change.

I'll join the AAPA when they apologize to this guy for rescinding his invitation to the AAPA conference when he was given the PARAGON award.

World famous physician, incredible supporter of PAs, earned the PARAGON award from the AAPA....but they caved to politically correct leftists who twisted his words around and "disinvited" him from accepting the award in person.

Ahh, not for all of us!  God bless Texas!  At present time all you have to have done is pass PANCE initially.  When I got out back in the stone age you just had to be a graduate of an approved CAHEA program (acronym from times long gone) and I never had to take a jurisprudence exam either.  We're talking the era of three state programs, excluding AF program at Sheppard AFB.

Guest Paula

Can you imagine how STUPID the a$$clowns who made that decision would look if Trump wins the election and appoints Dr. Carson as the Administrator for CMS or, even better, as Secretary of HHS?

Or Surgeon General?

I vaguely remember the Dr. Carson issue but could someone give the details on what happened? Thanks

After becoming a world-renown pediatric neurosurgeon, and leading advocate for PAs, Dr. Carson rose to political fame when he gave a terrific speech in front of President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast.  You should listen to the speech, cause it's awesome.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjoteaslaPOAhUP3mMKHSTXAIcQyCkIJzAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DKpiryahOspY&usg=AFQjCNF0cCD-wCcBtf4xXAsY_O4j1k6BvA&sig2=et_BPyPH_tY_DHJK38pdRQ&bvm=bv.128617741,d.cGc

Then he was on the Sean Hannity show and he said "Marriage is between a man and a woman. No group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality, it doesn't matter what they are. They don't get to change the definition."

((Warning:  If your PC alarm just went off and you are in sudden need of retreating to your safe-space like the AAPA leadership, read that quote again, this time using all of those comma rules in the English language.  He was not equating homosexuals with NAMBLA or beastophiles, he was simply saying nobody should be able to change the definition of marriage.))

Leftists/liberals went NUTS and pushed to silence him (think about that, and then re-watch his National Prayer Breakfast speech again about how PC is killing us like silence killed the birds).

At about this time Dr. Carson, and the PA who worked for him (can't remember her name) had won the AAPA Paragon Award for being the epitome of what a Physician/PA team should be.  Part of winning the Paragon Award is an invitation to the AAPA conference and giving a speech.

The 'leadership' at AAPA totally fell for the leftist garbage that was being spewed about Dr. Carson equating homosexuality to bestiality (which any reasonable person can read his comment, or watch them on TV, and see that he did NOT) so they "disinvited" him to come to the AAPA conference.

So yeah, it would be hilarious to see Dr. Carson was appointed as Surgeon General, CMS administrator, or Secretary of HHS.

I am glad Dr. Carson represents the PA/doc team well.

He fell out of my political favor with some of his beliefs and some of his past.

The media twists everything and sound bytes can be deceiving.

If he wanted to head up the NCCPA right about now - I would applaud. Someone who understands the PA/Doc relationship and has more common sense than most.

AAPA and NCCPA need a mediator (not Dr. Phil....) and be locked in a room together and then EVERYTHING PUT TO A VOTE AMONGST NCCPA CERTIFIED PAs and then we move on.

Order a gross of big girl panties and hand em out. Let's get this bus moving!!

And that is fine that you disagree with him politically. You and I disagree with much politically, but I would fight to ensure you can say what you want without censorship.

But what is NOT fine is the leftists in America shutting down any speech they disagree with simply by labeling it "hate speech."  Unfortunately the leftist media is completely complicit in this.

I don't want to derail this thread talking about Ben Carson, because he shouldn't be the focus on which we hang our hat for developing the future of the PA profession.

And while he didn't say that gay = pedophile = bestiality; let's not delude ourselves into thinking it's not a political tactic of mentioning bad things alongside something we oppose in order to associate them. All sides, all politicians do this.

You wouldn't like it if a someone said "No person, be they Boatswain, be they a rapist, be they a murder, should be able to do XYZ." Of course that's not saying you are a rapist or a murder by definitions of the English language, but come on, it's a tactic to mention all of them in the same breath. And it's shitty.

I've met the man, I've heard he was a great surgeon; but his views on LGBT don't line up with the medical community's or now the rest of the country. And if for whatever reason he did become some figure in our government, I would hope that he's not petty enough to be punitive against PAs because he was disinvited to accept some award or against Johns Hopkins.

You're painting with a broad brush with your "medical community's...country" statement regarding LGBT opinions.

So, back on the AAPA. I get that some people aren't members for various issues they have with the organization. To me, it seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face. The AAPA leadership and organization is not static, and it seems that if "we" want to see them act in different ways, joining and participating would be the most logical way to steer them.

But the leftists, including the cowardly leadership of the AAPA who cowed to the bully leftists, repeatedly said that he equated homosexuality with bestiality.

And if people, including me, rapists, and murderers all WANTED to be able to do XYZ, then I wouldn't have a problem with someone using that sentence because it is grammatically correct.  In the case of Dr. Carson's statement, homosexuals, pedophiles, and beastophiles (and many liberals) WERE/ARE trying to do XYZ (change the definition of marriage).

With regard to his "views" on LGBT....I think virtually all of us think everyone should be treated with respect, and we should work even harder to show respect to our fellow Americans that we disagree with.

Lastly, I doubt Dr. Carson WOULD be as petty as the AAPA by holding that against him.  Just another reason to not join the AAPA.

You're painting with a broad brush with your "medical community's...country" statement regarding LGBT opinions.

But that's what liberals and leftists do.  They say the "argument is settled" (whether it is climate change, communal bathrooms, or redefining marriage), and then portray anyone who disagrees a hater, racist, homophobe, mysogenist, Nazi, etc.

Let's get back to the whole PA point regarding certification.

We are on a slippery slope that has nothing to do with the original post.

Not that open discussion isn't worthy but we have derailed this particular topic.

The point is that the AAPA leadership has lost the faith of many PAs.

But not for the reasons you are citing that are way off topic.

And, remember that AAPA has a small membership compared to the number of certified PAs in the US.

The thread has derailed.

Can't get it back on course..........................

Well, consenting sentient adults who want to marry are a tad different than people who want to marry kids or animals, both in numbers and reason. Kids and animals are not capable of that consent, and it's an absurd false equivalency.

Judeo-Christian marriage has evolved over the centuries too. We no longer (in most places) let 12 year old girls get married off to a guy for 20 silver pieces. So what constitutes allowable marriage has changed over time. We didn't let interracial couples marry for a long time too, and that was wrong. Regardless, in the United States of America, marriage confers legal rights and benefits, and it was those legal rights that same-sex adults, in committed relationships desired. There was no good alternative put forth (just like the PA name change) without rewriting lots of laws, to allow our fellow gay citizens to enjoy the same benefits.

Regardless of your religious views, gays are serving openly in our Armed Forces for 5 years now (and many were serving with distinction long before), and it didn't cause our military to collapse... Gay adults can now marry across the country and life goes on, the US is still here. I feel we, as a country, despite the polarizing news media and 24-hour nonstop cycle of garbage, are stronger then ever before.

Edit: That's all I can say on it. Thank you Reality Check for trying to stabilize the thread, but I think the pt has expired!

I'm tempted to surgically nuke all the off-topic posts, or try and split them out into a separate thread, since I believe in the importance of the original topic, but if everyone can agree to get back on track without needing to have the last word, we wouldn't need that...
