Currently in the process of shadowing Pa's before I finally send my application in. Just to for a baseline, here are some of my application credentials: I have an OK gpa of a 3.0 (Nothing crazy I know, but still hopeful!) I am in my 4th semester of Paramedic school, I graduate 2 weeks after the deadline for application to the Pa program. I'm a nationally registered EMT (hopefully that helps) I graduated this summer from Miami-dade with Pre-PA AA. I just recently turned 23 so lets give this Pa thing a shot! I know, a little later than I should but this is my first time and I just found out about the school. A little about me, I just turned 40, I have a crummy GPA of 2.9 with the last 56 credit hours taken recently of a 4.0. I have been a practicing Paramedic for over 11 years now with over 15 years in EMS total. I hope that my recent drive of the 4.0 classes and the experience will help me get in somewhere! Lcollada Posted December 28, 2016 Share Posted December 28, 2016 Hey guys, My name is Lily, I'm 29 years old, just finished my AA with a 3.7 GPA and now just patiently waiting to hopefully hear back for the entrance exam in Feb. I've been a surgical tech for 11 years and counting with 3 amazing plastic and reconstructive surgeons that almost cry to hear that I might have to leave to go to school jaja. I feel confident and completely ready to work hard and get in this program. When I applied this year CHM 1045+1046 were not required and now they are. I have to go in person to talk to a counselor and see about that. This would be the only thing prohibiting me from getting, and the entrance exam of course. If anyone is interested in a study sesh please let me know. I work a full time job but now will be taking more time off to focus on the entrance exam. Hopefully this time will suffice! DoctorMedicalSciencePAC Posted January 1, 2017 Share Posted January 1, 2017 The new MDC Physician Assistant webpage says the following: About the Associate of Science The Associate of Science degree in Physician Assistant (PA) has been discontinued. Miami Dade College has instituted a new degree track to replace the previous pathway. The NEW degree track will now be the attainment of an AS degree in Health Services Management (60 credits) which will allow students to enroll in a PA option to pursue the Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Health Sciences with an Option in Physician Assistant Studies. Remember that the accrediting body which accredits all PA programs (the ARC-PA) has initiated an initiative to deny accreditation to any school who does not confer a Masters Degree to their graduating PA students beyond the year 2020. This means that all PA programs who do not currently confer Master's (such as MDC) must affiliate with a school who can confer a graduate degree (St. Francis is the current affiliation with MDC). Just remember that to keep your horizons broad you should take prerequisites that will allow you to apply to as many schools as possible, so do your research!! And never give up!! Look at Petunia, she never gave up and got accepted to Duke, where Dr. Stead trained the first PA's!!! Amazing tenacity! :) MDC's "Associate in Science in Physician Assistant" has been "the last of the Mohicans" for a long time, and, according to the website, is now discontinued. It is our understanding that in order to comply with the ARC-PA initiative, MDC PA Program has to transition from an Associate degree into a Bachelors degree, so that their students graduating beyond 2020 are conferred a Masters at the time of graduation. Class of 2019 (those who get accepted this year) are the last class that MDC will allow to enter into the PA Program without a Bachelors. Class of 2020 (those who begin in Spring 2018) will only be allowed entry if they already have a Bachelors and all required prerequisites. It is exciting to see the profession evolve to become on par with Nurse Practitioners by setting the standard terminal degree to a Masters degree, and these changes are the baby steps that MDC is taking to help bring the ARC-PA's initiative into fruition. I have been studying what they provided to us when we turned in our application. I'm so nervous waiting to get the invitation for the exam. They said end of january, but I want to know my exam date. I'm just concerned with when they schedule it and my work schedule, asking for a day off 2 weeks ahead of time is cutting it close at my job and may not be possible. I hope they are flexible.
