Negotiation/Offer matching

Recommended Posts

So here is my scenario:

I have two offers, one in an area I love, one in an area I'm on the fence about.

The one in my favorite area is UC at 96k per year, great comprehensive benefits. Opportunities to pick up extra shifts with an hourly rate that I don't have in writing yet. (a friend with the same company is getting 65/hr for additional hours). Hours are 8-5 mon-fri and 9-2 on the weekends.

The one in the other area is UC, 15 12s per month, salary is 105k +performance bonus up to 10k per year that is calculated based on pt satisfaction and RVU, and opportunity to pick up extra shifts at 650 per month. At this time I could pick up several shifts per month. Benefits are great and comparable to the above offer sans some CME money. I will definitely hit 115k minimum in my first year, with raise to 115 base the second year.

Good physician supervision at both places, which is important to me. I feel like the environment at the lower paying and favorable area would be slightly better than the other location. Total earnings potential for job 2 is a decent amount higher, though lower per hour. My goal is to pay off loans ASAP so sacrificing some life comfort/happiness is completely fine with me.

My question is this:

How do I go about trying to see if the practice giving offer #1 can match or come close to matching offer #2? Do I just explain how I would love to be there but........... and then tell them about the other offer and then send them the official offer if they ask for it? I just want to go about this in the most diplomatic way possible and in a way that is the accepted industry standard for negotiating.

How many days will you be working at the first job? Because if it's 8-5 M-F and 9-2 on Sat/Sun and you are working all those shifts for 96K/year, that comes out to 55 hours a week putting your hourly rate at $33.56/hour. This is no where near enough money for all those hours.

With job 2 working 12 15s a month making 105K/year, you will be making $48.61/hour plus more with incentives and benefits.

A $15/hr pay rate difference for a full time 40hr/week job comes out to a difference for roughly $30,000 at the end of the year. Huge difference.
