Urgent Care, OB/GYN or something else?

Recommended Posts

Help! I need some advice.

So I'm currently in urgent care. After reading so much on this forum I'm gaining more confidence in my stresses at work. I kinda thought it was just me, but reading through posts I believe I'm not alone in my concerns (thank you). My biggest complaint is I'm the solo provider no supervising doc or other PA or NP in the office. The pros are the money is good IMO 58$ per hour with quarterly bonus of around 2500$ each depending on pt volume. But I hate the stress I don't think the money is worth it. And I like the schedule I have kids so three days a week is awesome.

I have experience in OB GYN and interviewed w a doc I really liked. But downside is he only wants one day a week now maybe more in the future and only 50$ per hour. I left OB in the past bc of the money I was only making 39$ per hour sadly so an offer of 50$ sounded good.

But now I need to leave UC I don't want the stress any more even though money and schedule are good. So I'm debating on not taking the one day a week OB GYN job and looking for something in the same pay grade I'm making now but an area I like or seeing if the OB will take me more days per week???Problem with going to more hours w the OB GYN is I wouldn't make enough money for my family having the schedule I want.

So anyone on family medicine, OB GYN can you give me an idea of salary? Or other specialties that may be comparable to what I currently make?

I think I took the OB GYN job bc I'm unhappy where I'm at but I think I need to invest more time in interviewing to find the best fit.

Thank you for any advice!

I just started a new job in family medicine. The pay is way less, but the hours and stress level are great. The practice seems very supportive and the other PAs (some of which have been there for over 5 years) are all happy.

But you're not going to get that kind of money in FM.

I've always felt ER/UC route to have such a large gap in stress and liability compared to working in a specialty/primary clinic. Sure if you want to make the most money as a PA you need to be in those fields but i can never swallow the sacrifices it takes to make that money

That's not what I wanted to hear LOL. So I called the OB GYN doc today and he said he's open to having me more days. I like him and I think it'd be a good fit. So do you think 50$ per hour is a reasonable offer? Or too low?

Do you have access to the PA salary report?

Nobody makes a whole lot in primary care. I'm in the 75th percentile of PAs in my specialty with my level of experience and I make $44/hr. Not amazing in terms of what I could be making as a PA, but I have good quality of life and don't dread going into work everyday, which is much different from my previous much higher paying job. I use all of that energy that I save from not hating life to work on my side business. :)

In any event, based on the salary report, $50/hr is awesome for a PA in OBGYN with no experience. I say take it.

Thank you for the advice! I hope it works out. I think I'll be happier. Student loans will have to wait longer but I think it's worth it.

I concur with Maverick. I've been in OB/GYN for five years and this is at the high end of the pay scale. If you like the doc, and you think you'll learn from him/her, it sounds like a good move.

Thank you! It's good to know. I left my last OB GYN job bc the money was terrible but the benefits were good for full time employees. The new job has no benefits it's a small company. Which isn't so bad we have them thru my husband but maybe that's why he was willing to pay more.
