So I guess everyone knows that UTPA--University of Texas Pan American--has been absorbed into the larger University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Here is the webpage for the physician assistant program at UTRGV: http://www.utrgv.edu/pa/index.htm  . The courses will be held on the former campus of UTPA in Edinburg, I assume.

Here is the webpage with application instructions: http://www.utrgv.edu/graduate/for-future-students/graduate-programs/program-requirements/physician-assistant-studies-mpas/index.htm

It seems that UTRGV is still updating the PA program's webpages. I think some major updates were made this morning!

One question that has been asked much in the past is, "Is it difficult for out-of-state applicants to get into the PA programs of state-owned schools like UTRGV?" The answer is "yes," despite what some faculty/staff might tell you at the various Texas public PA schools. I believe that the state-owned schools are not allowed to have more than 10% of the PA program students be from out-of-state. At UTRGV, applicants from the Rio Grande Valley have preference. Texas applicants have preference over out-of-state applicants. In my class at UTPA (now UTRGV), we had some out-of-state students and some students who were not from the Rio Grande Valley. If you are not living in or from Texas, the chance of you getting into UTRGV's PA program is pretty low.

Another common question was, "Do I need to know the Spanish language to attend UTRGV's PA program?" The official answer from the PA program might be "No," but in reality, yes, you do need to have some of the basics of the Spanish language (officially that language is called "castellano" to distinguish it from other languages in Spain, although everyone in the RGV seems to call it Spanish). In some of the clinics where you will gain experience, most of your patients could speak Spanish and little English. Don't worry too much if you have problems with some people's accents; usually they will speak slower for you if they see that you don't understand them. If you have experience conversing in Spanish, try to let that be known during the application process.

Was wondering if anyone else's graduate/supplemental application shows that their CASPA is still not received?

Yes mine still says CASPA has not been recieved. I called yesterday and was told that if you received an email indicating that they have received your CASPA application then disregard that the supplemental app (SA) says hasn't received CASPA. The lady was telling me that their PA school does things differently, and made it seem like they have a default setting for all their grad school SA. Hope this helps!

Quick question, did anymore send in the documentation of shadowing? I was verified a few weeks ago and I still show the "not recieved" and that is one of the missing items.

I was told by the Graduate college that once you submit the supplemental, the admissions committee will retrieve all of those documents from CASPA. Your observation hours should have already been reported to CASPA. It still says CASPA not received - I called and was told that they are still reviewing May and June applications and will update the status once they go over your application. I just wanted to clarify because I was so confused as to why they never received it, but that's how it's done over there. Hope this helps! & good luck!

I recently called the MPAS office at UTRGV to ask about the documentation for the 50 hours of shadowing. I was told that this was no longer a requirement for admission. I explained to the lady on the phone that it was listed as a requirement on their website but she assured me that they were not considering it for admission.

Has anyone heard anything similar to this?

Also, has anyone received any communication stating that their application is under review?

Thanks in advance!

Just giving you guys a heads up if just recent just finished any pre-reqs.I received an email last night asking for unofficial transcripts for incomplete courses at the time I submitted CASPA. I had one summer course that ended after I had submitted CASPA. Looks like they are still in the process of reviewing applicants, hopefully interviews come soon!

In September, I was asked to send an updated official transcript to CASPA to show completion of Microbiology (taken in summer) and to fax UTRGV an unofficial transcript. I was told the 50 hours of shadowing is no longer a requirement and that everyone's supplemental application will show "CASPA not received." On October 1, all applications will be pulled from CASPA and each applicant will be compared against the entire applicant pool. UTRGV does not use rolling admission which is a good thing in my opinion. There is outdated information on the utpa websites, The website you want to bookmark is http://www.utrgv.edu/pa/

Just checked my application login and they stamped CASPA received at 1:57pm on 10/1/16. Has anyone received an interview yet? I know it's still early. Positive thoughts!

I believe they start sending out the first invites around late December. It may be different this year though, I am not sure.

What programs did you apply to? So we can gauge because I haven't heard back from half the schools as well and verified on June 9th.

Applied May 31st, heard through email. I'm sure she is still in the process of sending out invites! This is my second time applying and interviewing here, does anyone know if the format has changed much? I remember it being a "cognitive" and "non-cognitive" style interview with one being an open application to the interviewers, while the other was a closed one. If anyone has any other info would be much appreciated!

What do you mean by cognitive and non-cognitive style interview? Can you please elaborate on that a little bit? I've been trying to find more information on how the interview process is as well as what kind of questions they ask but I've come up a bit short. I would appreciate it if anyone you or anyone else can give any pointers!
