Poetsiren
Hello, all!I am looking for some advice. I am a new grad PA, but have previous experience (over a decade) doing physicals and labs as a translator and front office MA in several specialties - surg, hem-onc, occupational physicals There aren't alot of jobs in my area AT ALL. Since September I can count a total of about 7-8 jobs popping up on various websites for my area that are in the FM/UC field. FM is my DREAM - seriously, I am very confident in my skills as a FM provider. I have hesitations about working in ER. I just got a job offer - first one since my October graduation (and my NCCPA certification was in April). Locum tenens position Let's just say the hours are WONDERFUL for me - 24hrs per week. 2 months minimum, If it's a good fit they are offering permanent placement by the client walk-in urgent care, no call - hospital is down the street 25 pts per day 1099 position, no benefits (I don't need health benefits as I am covered by my husband) company covers malpractice with Tail (although he says they "don't call it tail" - if anyone knows what they mean, I would welcome info until I see contract in action.) 65/hr Only catch is that they are 1.5 hours away from me in a MORE rural location than I am, but they pay for travel/hotel if I need it - plus I would rather travel to a more rural location than spend the 1 hour to get to a downtown area where more of the jobs are. Advice? I've never thought about Locums before. FYI: I already read everything in these posts:http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/index.php?/topic/39441-first-job-offer-per-diem/ http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/index.php?/topic/18424-locum-tenens/?hl=locum
RuralER/Ortho
I would be hesitant to do locums as a new grad. Typically, the expectation for a locums provider is to see a full schedule with no help essentially. Regardless of pay, etc I would recommend against this for a new grad. If you do decide to take the job, ask for a copy of the insurance policy.
Moderator ventana Posted May 20, 2016 Moderator Share Posted May 20, 2016 new grads should not do locums or unsupervised urgent care or ER IMHO
Poetsiren
Thanks for the replies, RuralER/Ortho and Ventana. There is a doc on site and available. It isn't unsupervised. TBH, the only reasons I am considering it are 1) I have 4 applications out and my CV is available on 3 sites while I search every 2 days for more postings (not to mention the 3 recruiting/headhunter agencies I have had working for me since July of last year), and 2) the big hospitals have come in and snatched up almost all the offices around me and everyone redirects me to their HR, and 3) I have lived on savings since graduation in October. Husband lost his job at the same time and had difficulties getting another one for more than a few months because he works in a high IT position. My stress was brutal and, as a result, I didn't pass my PANCE until April on try #2, so add 3 months to my joblessness and another $475. He has a good job now. I am happily a PA-C and that is a plus for the job hunt, now, obviously! But still, financially, I need the work pretty badly. This wasn't meant to be a pity party - it's just my frame of mind at the moment. Majority of job postings want 2 years previous work as a PA and a current state license. I even apply to these, regardless, hoping someone will take interest. Some have, even if only a little. At the very least, my thinking is to get my license activated which you cannot do here without an SP, get a paycheck, work my 2 months and either quit or accept a full time position if I like it there and it's offered. Maybe I won't like it there, but If the job is open to new grads....it's 2 months and I can work my tail off for 2 months and look for something else. I am still holding out for those other jobs, and still active in my search. But I bet everyone here knows what it's like to want to keep your family afloat. Apologies for my venting. Again, this wasn't meant as my own little pity party. I'm open to suggestions, short of moving bc right now that just isn't an option. I understand the issues with new PA grads doing locums. I promise you that I do. Besides, the question is more about the job offer and if it is good or not, rather than my ability to do the work.
