Access to E Clinical10 from home

Recommended Posts

I wanted to get access to our EMR from home to check charts to make sure documentation, phone calls or labs are all addressed. Just not enough time during clinic hours. I know about not doing anything for free. I will deal with that but are there HIPPA issues? We are not cloud based but have server in office. Also, does anyone know if the chart has to be "locked" within 24 hours? Thanks

So take this with a grain of salt since I'm a PA student. My parents own a medical practice that uses ECW (dads an MD) and I helped set up the system.

There's three ways to access ECW at home. One is remote by accessing the server from your laptop or computer at home. ECW can get that set up for you. Second way is to have ECW set up on a laptop that you take home. We have two laptops set up this way. The only things you can not access are faxes but you can access labs that come across. Third is through the mobile app (again ECW should be able to help get you set up). You can definitely access labs and address them on the app as well as a few other functions but it's limited since it's a mobile app.

My dad is careful about HIPAA but again he owns the practice so yours may have other guidelines in place that may prevent you from accessing ECW off site.

The chart (from ECW standpoint) does not have to be locked within 24 hours. My dad sometimes leaves charts unlocked for various reasons for longer than 24 hours and then will lock them once those issues are addressed (or when he finishes the chart on the weekend which doesn't happen that often anymore since he's getting better with finishing his charts that same day).

We just got ECW about 1.5 years ago and my dad went from never having turned on a computer to being able to finish his charts on the same day in that timespan.

Hope that helps! :)
