I got a letter from the government saying I had to go online to fill out a Juror Qualification Questionnaire.

Apparently you can request an excuse from jury duty if you're a physician, dentist, pharmacist, nurse (either NP, RN, LPN, or vocational), or an OR Tech. But not if you're a PA.

I'm actually still a student so this has me a little worried.

My take would be that the person writing that document does not know the NP/PA comparison compatibility thing.

I have been excused from jury duty for being the solo provider at a rural health clinic and the clinic would be closed if I were absent. We were a Federally Qualified clinic, etc.

I was excused from FEDERAL jury duty when I worked for a surgeon in a big city because it meant he didn't have his surgical assist. Dodged a bullet on a case that lasted 3 MONTHS.

Perhaps the school would see fit to write a letter stating that you would miss valuable education that cannot be repeated and could jeopardize your status within your graduating class, etc. You always have to sound awful on paper.

I am not necessarily advocating skipping jury duty just because we are in medicine but when it has a negative impact on practice or school - then it should be no different than a physician.

Just my old 2 cents.....

We have had students excused from jury duty. We usually provide a letter explaining how intense the curriculum is and we ask that their jury service be transferred to after the semester ends. As far as I know, no one has had a problem.

I got called for jury duty while in PA school. Because of the way Phoenix is set up, it's almost impossible to get excused or exempt. They feel most people can show up for one day and explain the circumstances. You *can* defer jury duty for approximately 6 weeks (I think). Anyways, I went, because I had nothing that prevented me from showing up (this particular day had less make up work than others). Ended up getting called on a civil case and spent my entire day there dealing with it.

Anyways. I think I'd try to talk to them about the wording of their letter. If other providers and techs are included, we should be as well.

I know multiple physicians that have been called and chosen to sit for jury in the last few months. We just had to scramble and the hospital had to call in some locums to cover. It's weird that each state has such different laws for jury.

Yep. Many of the physicians in my ER have gotten called for jury duty and have had to go. I was supposed to go in March myself... Got a letter in the mail telling me I needed to be prepared for it and call the court the weekend before the jury week. But apparently there was a "lottery" because when I called the number on the designated day it said I didn't have to report to court. Dreading the next time I get one.
