Do I have a chance at PA school?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

So it is my last semester of my junior year in college and I have not been doing so well lately since I started working. I've only taken these prerequisites so far and my grades are:

  • Medical Terminology: A
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I: A
  • Introductory Biology I: C
  • General Microbiology: D
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology II:

Here are some classes I'm currently taking that may count toward PA school:

  • College Algebra: C
  • Abnormal Psychology: E

My GPA right now is 2.8 but after this semester it will probably go down to 2.5.

I also got 1 E (which is like an F) in Lifespan and Human Development, I also have a W on Health Care in the U.S. I just feel so disappointed in myself and I feel like I have no chance at all at PA school anymore based on my grades and GPA. I'm planning to retake the 2 microbiology and A&P II after I graduate, hopefully it will bring my science GPA up a bit.

So...would I have a chance at PA school? Or should I just forget about it and start looking for another career? :(

Thank you so much!

If being a PA is what you want to do, SLOW DOWN. If you are working so much that your grades suffer you have three options:

1- Take fewer courses

2- Spread out your more difficult courses

3- Work less

As of right now, you need to repeat at least 3 courses, so you're looking at a gap year. Embrace that. Ace your courses, including the redo. Use your time to build experience a bit at a time.

You can do it, but quit cramming too much in. It isn't working for you and will cause you to fail. Slow down.

Maybe its a professor issue. I know when I started going to school,  I realized very quickly that a professor can make or brake your grade. Utilize the website rate my professors, and pick wisely.

Also, the fact that you are getting such low grades suggest a flaw in some method of your academic work. Maybe you're a procrastinator? Maybe you're not planning everything properly? Either way, like others have said, figure out where you are making your mistakes, ask your professors for advice, I'm sure they know your exact problem.

If you want a straightforward and honest answer, you're going to need to re-take a lot of classes, and do well in them, to be competitive or even apply to PA schools. If it's work that's keeping you from studying, then you need to re-evaluate where you're dedicating your time.  I don't know what situations you might have going on in your life, but I think it would be easier to dedicate the majority of your time to school now and work later, rather than struggling with both.
