username_1
I'm a high school senior trying to get ahead on HCE, so I'm trying to find a good emt-b program in Southern California that I can complete during the summer before I start school. Can anyone point me in the direction of one?
Timon
CIEMT on Long beach. 4 week course and a high NREMT pass rate.

Timon
I'm from the IE too. You can do Chaffey or MT Sac, but I still recommend you do the 4 week course at CIEMT.

I just looked it up, seems like a great program. Some complain about its difficulty, but what else should one expect from a 4 week program. I have one question though, how many days a week do you attend class? It's an hour away from me and I don't know if I want to drive that far everyday. Timon
They have different options. The one I took was M-F from 4pm to 10pm. You can sign up for the exam at the end at the Pearson vue testing site in Ontario or San Dimas.

Administrator rev ronin Posted April 28, 2016 Administrator Share Posted April 28, 2016 If you can afford to travel, WEMT by WMI of NOLS is often offered in a 4-week format. Not cheap, but awesome way to get an EMT.
username_1
Update: so I'm about to enroll In an emt program, but I'm a little cautious. I recently heard that it's really difficult to find a job in Southern California as an emt. Can anyone verify this information? I went there for my EMT before PA school and it's a great program. Still remember things they taught me from like 5 years ago now! As far as jobs it will be easy to find one at a private company, as the pay is on the low end usually. Some places are better work environments than others, so keep that in mind. The public areas jobs such as fire departments will be much harder to find. I worked in LA though not the IE, so not familiar with that exact job market though. Good luck on the job search! Other than salary(which I honestly don't care much about), what are the differences between them?
Deanj59
From my limited experience, unless the private company is 1 to 1 (EMT and paramedic) the majority of transports are discharges, interfacility transports, and psych calls. There are 911 private companies that sometimes contract out to help out local fire departments, but from what I understand that's more common in the smaller cities. Public sector jobs are much more competitive from what I have seen. Most of the guys I used to worked with attempted to work for them (I was the rare guy wanting to do PA from the start), but competition was high. So in your opinion, would you suggest that I go ahead with the program, or would getting a different form of HCE be best. Personally, the EMT route seems the most interesting and convenient for my circumstances as someone about to start school. The program can be completed during my summer break. The only issue is finding a job. What do you suggest?
Deanj59
EMT is a good intro to medicine. Medic is even better if you go that route as well. I personally think that MAs have more exposure to various meds and day to day complaints of the outpatient office than an EMT though. If you can work as an ER-tech after your EMT cert then that's kinda the best of both worlds of prep. I still think EMT gave me a good basic experience though. Good luck with whatever you decide. cc56
I got my EMT in high school. In Orange County they called it ROP. I got out of school early and went to class on Tues/Thur like college. It was free for me, look into that. Then again you might be graduating in like 2 weeks.
