Competitiveness of residencies

Recommended Posts

In my experience, they are more competitive than you imagine they will be. No hard numbers to back that up. Only way you might get hard numbers is by contacting the programs individually.

I've interviewed at 5 EM residencies over the last 6-7 months before being accepted to my top choice. I declined two more interviews this week. Most programs have 2-3 spots and interview 2-3 candidates for each spot. One program interviewed 17 folks for 3 spots. They claimed that those 17 were the top 5-10% of applicants. I took that with a grain of salt, but they did accept NPs, so who knows.

If you are looking into doing a residency, be aware that there can be a slight edge to local applicants. I had several interviews where I found myself among strong applicants from local PA programs who had rotated with the interviewers or had worked with them prior to PA school as scribes or techs. Breaking into this circle from out of town or state can be tough. From the residencies perspective, taking a local applicant, especially one you've worked with clinically, is hard to fault. I would likely do the same in their shoes. I'm not saying programs don't strongly consider outside candidates, just be aware that you need to have a strong application and have strong answers to "why EM", "why a residency", and "why our residency."
