Norwalk Residency

Recommended Posts

Anyone done the Norwalk residency that can give me an insiders opinion? I'm planning on applying to this one and maybe Montefiore and St. Luke's. Really interested to know if its worth it/what the experience is like/typical week/typical duties etc.

Any information would be much appreciated!

It's been 10 yrs since I was at Monte- so things may have changed.

Some rotations vary but most were Q3 call. Some busy services (gen surg at Weiler was pretty busy for me), others like Head/Neck were cush.

It was a tremendous committment but I was single with no expectations of living on a reasonable salary (it was 42k at the time). I suspect it would be hard to do it with a family.

The teaching environment was good at monte. It was where I fell in love with the ICU, mostly because the then-director (now gone) was the lead SICU PA.

The current director, Bob Sammartano, has been at Monte a while. He is a peds surgery PA, and was the lead PA there at the Children's hospital when I was there. He is a great advocate for surgery PAs and very approachable.

If you plan a career in surgery it's a smart move to complete a residency, if only for your own knowledge base and confidence in dealing with various specialties of surgical patients.

I am a current resident at the Norwalk residency..I can honestly say I don't regret my decision at all to complete a residency..We are about 4 months into it..the learning opportunities are endless..staff PAs and surgeons are extremely supportive..we spend most of our time at Norwalk where PAs are the "go to" for essentially everything..also get the opportunity to rotate through any specialty you can think of at Yale and other surrounding hospitals (3 electives)..as for advice..do your homework and talk to current residents..if you have more specific questions feel free to send me a message

I went through the Norwalk Program a few years back and never regretted my decision. It's a tough year with a lot of long hours but it's worth it. At Norwalk, you are never competing against surgical residents because the PA's are the house staff. The doctors were very supportive and the program director, Ginny Hilton, is great. You also spend some time outside of Norwalk at Yale and those are great rotations as well. I can honestly say it really helped with getting the job I wanted after I finished. If you are interested in more than one, it's a good idea to apply and then interview. You can see what would be the best match for you and the goals you have.
