Guest ERCat
I was thinking of buying UpToDate but it's 500 bucks for a year! I think it's a great resource but I want to get the best bang for my buck. Any ideas for how I can use my CME money for ER best? I already have the EM Bootcamp and Advanced EM Bootcamp... And tons of books like Tintinalli's, Rosen's, Minor Emergencies, etc.
Administrator rev ronin Posted February 6, 2016 Administrator Share Posted February 6, 2016 I get UpToDate free through the school for whom I precept PA students. Have you done PEER VIII? The Difficult Airway Course? I've got a nice review of several wilderness medicine courses, but from the tone of your post, it sounds like you have money, but not time... Is that an accurate impression?
Guest ERCat
Yes - very accurate. I am working 230 hours a month right now. Will be moving down to 160 hours eventually but right now I am very busy till they hire more people. So I don't think I am gonna be able to go to conferences till the end of the year. primadonna22274
I got 2 yr subscription to Up-to-date for about $400 as a resident. Maybe worth checking out? It's absolutely worth more. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
Moderator ventana Posted February 7, 2016 Moderator Share Posted February 7, 2016 AAPA has $100 off UpToDate. Then $50 off renewal I would get 1) up to date 2) prescribers letter 3) a nice laptop.......
Michigander
I was in the same situation but different specialty. I bought myself a second (high end) stethoscope, penlight, pulse-ox, membership to some relevant organizations and books. I would have bought UpToDate but I have it through a second job, it is well worth it for the information and CMEs.
delco714
So you're saying you can't take time away bc work is too busy...And that's acceptable??
Guest ERCat
For the time being, yes...? I am the only PA at my ER right now and we are hiring a handful more in the coming months. I will be down to normal hours starting next month...

I will be down to normal hours starting next month...I'm still confused. I'm the only pa for a 6 surgeon multifaceted urology service.. It's been that way for 5 months. Don't see the issue. You're one PA, you shouldn't have to make up for the short comings and be withheld from doing your own thing in this context. :/
Administrator rev ronin Posted February 9, 2016 Administrator Share Posted February 9, 2016 This is why I negotiated overtime into my contract. The practice has a financial incentive to make sure I work no more than 80 hours per two week pay period, which is just the way I like it.
Guest ERCat
I worked 230 hours my first month, 230 hours my second month. I asked for as many shifts as possible and they were happy about it because they are short staffed. And I loved every minute of it and I made tons of overtime pay! I am working 180 hours this month and 160 hours next month... Because I said I wanted to work a little less. I don't even know why I am explaining this! My question was what are some awesome EM resources and that at this second I don't have time or desire to go to a conference. Later on in the year I will. For now I am just settling in and want some great on the job resources.
delco714
Sorry. I got side tracked. See your point. Just wanted to make sure a colleague wasn't getting taken advantage of!
medic25
I'm a big fan of PEPID; I use it pretty routinely during my ED shifts as a reference.

And since it's really cheap, I also recommend adding ERres to your app suite
