So... I am moving to Florida. I have been a PA for 2 years, all in Psychiatry. I have my CAQ in Psychiatry.

I am not certain I want to stay in Psych but here is my question...

What are the laws in FL WRT Schedule 2 prescribing?

Are PAs allowed to write for Atypicals? Stimulants?

Should I stay in Psych in FL?

Any advice would be really helpful..

I don't think you can rx schedule II's here. Atypicals and stimulants may be along the same lines as well. Here is a good site to check out for state laws for pa's. If you're an aapa member there is also some more info. From what I have experienced (as a pre-pa and army medic working with PA's from all over) Florida is pretty limited compared to other states.

Bill was just passed allowing PA/NP's to prescribe controlled substances. The bill will take effect starting July 1st. I believe you can read more about it on the FAPA website.

PSA - I don't know all the requirements for securing prescribing privileges, but FAPA is offering the required 3-hour course at their upcoming symposium:

FAPA to Offer Three-Hour Course on “Prescribing Controlled Substances” at 2016 Summer Symposium

Starting in January 2017, under provisions of HB 432 passed by the 2016 Florida Legislature, Physician Assistants will be allowed to prescribe controlled substances.   With the passage of this landmark legislation comes the requirement for all PAs who plan to prescribe these medications to complete a three-hour course on Prescribing Controlled Substances.   (If a PA does NOT want to prescribe controlled substances, then he/she does not have to take course.)

FAPA is presenting a comprehensive, three-part lecture on Prescribing Controlled Substances as a pre-conference course on Thursday, August 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, August 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Each course is worth 3 hours of Category I CME and each course meets the state-mandated requirements for controlled substances review.

Presenter Alan Keating, PA-C, a nationally-known CME Category I speaker on pain management, prescription abuse, and related topics, will utilize lectures, case studies, and Q&A to provide the information you need to know in order to properly and safely prescribe controlled substances as well as how to recognize signs of drug seeking behavior and abuse.

The course is offered free to FAPA members and to those registered for the 2016 FAPA Summer Symposium being held August 3-7, 2016, at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

This course is limited to the first 125 people who register.

To attend the course only on Thursday, August 4 click here.

We hope to see you in Fort Lauderdale!
