Pre-PA HCE

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am a Pre-Pa student trying to decide on how to fulfill my HCE requirements. I'm super nervous about applying in April and I do not have much with regards to HCE. I volunteer at a local nursing home and help take care of someone who is home bound (sort of as an unofficial home health aid). I was originally hoping to get into medical school but after shadowing a couple of Pa's I decided that being a PA would be a better fit for me.

Would this type of HCE suffice? What are some of your HCE's and what are your roles in them?

And most of the schools I hope to apply to do not require HCE.

Thank you guys!

Take a look around the forum, the topic of HCE is extensively debated.

That said, without knowing much else about your application, you may want to wait a cycle depending on the programs you want to apply to.  Some require paid HCE and volunteering duties may not suffice even if unpaid HCE is acceptable.  Also, if your unofficial 'home health aide' position is taking care of a relative of any kind, it most likely will not count as HCE.  Without an employer in that situation, it's hard to corroborate your duties and skills.

Even if the schools you apply to do not *require* HCE, you can be guaranteed that all applicants will have it and the ones that are competitive will have it in spades.  I don't mean to sound harsh, just want you to be realistic, but your experiences either won't count as HCE or are very weak if they do.

Like the above poster said it might be more beneficial for you to wait a year, accumulate more HCE and then apply. If your grades are stellar than it might offset your low HCE, but many applicants will probably have both good grades and extensive HCE. Taking a CNA class might be a good option. Some programs can lead to certification in just a few weeks and afterwards you can get a job in the field and start racking up hours. Best of luck you you!!
