ER salary question

Recommended Posts

I was recently offered a ER position in Los Angeles and would like to know if the salary and benefits

Offered is competitive. Is this a competitive rate based on my level of experience.

Base is $81k a year. 15 shifts a month and 10 hr/shift. Which comes out to $45/hour

Night shift-$45 extra

Holiday-$135

Productivity bonus: 24 patients/shift avg over the quarter I will receive $1 per patient.

If I see 26 patients/shift avg over the quarter I will receive $2 per patient.

Benefits:

1 week off first year

Profit sharing which comes out to about 10% of of my annual salary put into a pension

$500 cme

Paid malpractice

100% health benefits paid

I graduated from PA school in 2010. Worked in orthopedic surgery for the past year and part time at an urgent care for 8 months.

I will give you an idea of what I was just offered as a new grad in EM..

East Texas Main ED and fast track

$59/hr + production/satisfaction bonus up to $5/hr additional (about 1/2 of current PAs get the full bonus)

No night or weekend differential

No paid vacation

Will match 4% for 5% in 401k

$1500 CME

Paid Malpractice

Health Insurance at a cost anywhere from $70 - 600/month depending on plan and #family members

You will have to find out what the avg # of pts the PAs see to figure out if the bonus is a near guarantee. Retirement and health benefits look great though.

Pay is ok for someone new to em.

retirement not bad(some groups do up to 25%)

cme is abysmal. I got more than that at my first em pa job right out of school > 15 yrs ago.

1 week vacation blows. I get 2 weeks now and I think that sucks as I left 12 weeks/yr+ 1 week for cme at my last job....2-3 weeks/yr is minimal. 1 week is insulting.

dea? state license? professional memberships? life insurance? short/long term disability?

Higher then the national average but lower then the average for ER PAs. Even if you get the "productivity" bonus at the highest 26x15x3= 1170x4= 4680 + 81K= 85,680+ 8K retirement + 1K health=94,680. You are taking such a high liability being in the ER with the patient population we see. I am not trying to bash just know what you are worth. Take into account cost of living of LA and you are looking at and even higher chunk of money out of your salary. When I was a new graduate looking for a job I heard one of the best quotes to live by. "Those who expect more get more." Such a simple and true quote that can be seen in life.

Thanks for all of your input!

Jason09: Since I'm new to ER I figured $45 an hour was ok or avg for someone new to ER. However, my classmate who is also new to ER is making $60/hr. I was a little disappointed that I did not negotiate a higher rate or for "better" benefits...lesson learned. I figured I can treat this job like a "residency" bust my *** to learn as much as I can for 1-2 years and move on to another ER job. Hopefully it works out for me in the end.
