Practice act

Recommended Posts

As I was reading the practice act of NC I noticed it said that PAs can prescribe according to the written direction of the physician. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean like protocol?. IE if a person comes in with strep pharyngitis you have to write penicilline bc thats protocol? How does that work?

Doesn't need to be a specific written protocol-- can be broad and general. Can list "antibiotics" as class or drugs that you can prescribe. May list sorts of conditions you can or cannot treat. Can list classes of drugs you can prescribe, as well as devices. Can list tests and procedures you may order (again can be broad).

Can list what you can't do, such as cancer chemotherapeutic agents, drugs out of the scope of practice of your physician, procedures that doc wants to do himself or that you have not been trained to do, or sorts of patients doc wants to see himself (maybe he doesn't want his PA to handle suicidal psychiatric patients or HIV patients).
