MVPP2003
Hello !!! I am a new grad that recently got offered a position in IM at private practice in Pembroke FL. the Doc's wife (office manager) told me my salary along with benefits (401k, health insurance, malpractice, CME, 2 weeks PTO, cellphone). She said the contract was standard and they used it for their previous PAs. I asked if I can receive a copy of the contract, she said I was not allowed to have a copy until I signed and that I was more than welcome to take my time and review it at the office. Her reasoning was that in the past potential hires took the contract and used it to have other competing employers make counter offers. Has anyone run into this problem and how did you cope? pd
HopefulPA
Sorry but if they are not willing to give you a copy and let you review it before hand I see that as a red flag. Tell her you have verbally accepted the offer pending review of the contact. That your plan is to sign because you liked xy&z about the practice. But if it is to be considered a legally binding contact then you must be allowed to have a copy in advance. You may want to have an attorney review it to make sure you are not agreeing to anything you don't want to. If they are paying competitively then they should have nothing to worry about. Contrarian
^^^ What "Hopeful" said^^^.... Tell her in the sweetest most passive aggressive, sarcastic tone you can muster: "While they taught you many things about the practice of medicine in your program, Medical Contract Law and the legalese it contains wasn't included. Soooo... you WILL be needing the assistance of an attorney prior to signing such a important document... as you want to be sure you fully understand the agreement so that you can make sure that you are capable of meeting and if possible exceeding their expectations without the messiness of any misconceptions and preconceived notions." THEN SMILE...!!! :heheh:

Jason09
Yeah giant red flag. You should definitely get a copy to review at your leisure and not under the watch of your potential employer. I would walk away in a heart beat if they did not provide me with a formal contract to review before signing. Another red flag is that the office manager is wife of doc. Most of the time a no win scenario there.

Moderator ventana Posted October 4, 2011 Moderator Share Posted October 4, 2011 Wife as office manager. Ughhhhhh. If u gotta take the job u gotta take it. But be very aware these situations hardly ever work out. Make sure your contract has reasonable out clause with notice for both sides. I have flux 4 to 6 weeks notice for BOTH parties reasonable. Ake sure you have an annual review specified and gon for. Productivity bonus. Right up front good luck but by all means never sign anything with out reading it over and over. Not just a quick read and sign. Be very careful with claims made insurance policies
MVPP2003
Thanks for the feed back guys :) Anywho, I'll def. keep youz updated on the package in it self and if the passive aggressive smile is successful. I go in Thursday morning to “review the contract”. I’m soooo apprehensive of this job seeking business though; I felt blessed when I was offered this position because I have no prior medical background and frankly job market here in south florida sucks ! This doc was my IM elective preceptor back in June and for the most part he is OK to work along side. I had good autonomy, decent hours, efficient staff. Moreover, I guess knowing him and how he functions is better then going blind into a totally new office. BUT yes having the wife surveilling my behind ugh ! She did mention that she was the one delivering my review after 90 days based on what the doc says. Hmmmmmm. She was also very curious as to how long it would take me to make a decision … “ I have 2 other candidates I’m interviewing”---------- Ok Good day to everyone J
Moderator EMEDPA Posted October 4, 2011 Moderator Share Posted October 4, 2011 walk away....don't ever let a non-physician/pa write or deliver your review....
sai786
I had a preceptor a while back who told me the best advice she could give me was to not join a family business. Ventana is right on- these situations hardly ever work out.

Russell
This may be too obvious, but can someone go into more detail about non-providers giving reviews?
