packster
Hi everyone. I was just wondering if there are new grads out there that have been having difficulty finding a job. I'm having a tough time with my job hunt and just wanted see if anyone has any advice. I've been applying to nearly every opening in sight (within IL). However, I hardly ever get call backs to interview. Any suggestions on how I could make some money while finding a job?? Thanks for any feedback. xxbowiexx
If you are willing to move to NC, i have tons of leads for you. However, here's one not far from IL that was sent to me: Physician Assistant wanted for a unique academic surgery opportunity in Michigan. The position is primarily General Surgery, but also includes a mix of Orthopedic Surgery, Neuro Surgery, and Trauma Surgery. This opportunity in located in a community within driving distance of Lansing and Metro Detroit. Friendly neighborhoods and rural farms are just some of the living options available. Highly ranked public and private schools allow a wide variety of educational choices for families. Due to its location, this community is within driving distance of several public and private universities. Surgical experience is a plus, but all candidates will be considered. Jason09
In addition to applying online or with a resume I had success with calling the job. I had very little success looking if I didn't personally talk with who was looking at the application. Also networking is key as stated above. packster
Thanks for all of the feedback!! I can't move right now due to familial obligations. I'll have the option of looking for jobs outside of Illinois in January. I'm not really focusing on a specialty. I'm applying to everything from IM & PEDS to ORTHO & DERM. I went to PA school in Indiana; I also completed my rotations there. I have a friend who has been practicing for 3 yrs. Do you guys think I should shadow her so I have something current to put on my resume? The reason I am asking is because I graduated in May and I tend to have HR or potential employers ask me what I have been doing since I graduated school. Thanks for all of the advice/support. I haven't made an effort to call the job or personally talk with a potential employer. Thank you so much for the advice. I am definitely going to try that. I've just been applying online and emailing resumes. Also, how do I network if I don't know any medical professionals in the area I am living in? Btw I feel really stupid for asking this question. Thanks again I really appreciate all the advice.
btg138
You might also want to review your CV to ensure that you are thoroughly explaining what skills you have, what procdeures you've done in your rotations, the types of patients you are familiar with managing, etc.
Administrator rev ronin Posted September 7, 2011 Administrator Share Posted September 7, 2011 You've been "sitting on your butt" for four months? I know, unfair characterization, but that's how HR will look at it: Show them you haven't been. By all means, work at a free clinic, take classes (although I know there's not going to be much money for that), and I presume you've passed the PANCE? If you have nothing else better to do, log onto Medscape and rack up all the FREE CME you can stand.

packster
Lol rev ronin- I have been sitting on my butt!! I probably sound so dumb when I answer the HR folks with "well i passed the PANCE and I have been looking for a job during this time." lol. I hate being asked tht question. I am definitely going to be more productive and spend my time getting free CME credits. I'll also head on over to a few clinics in the area and see if I can volunteer- this will hopefully help me network in the area I am trying to find a job in. Thanks for the advice. Cmascio- I've been applying to nearly opening except for pain management positions. I've applied to numerous hospital positions. Many haven't gotten back to me but I'm trying not to freak out since hospitals do take their time. I hope I will hear from hospital HR soon. I'd be grateful for any leads. Thanks. alleycat
Packster, congrads on passing the PANCE. condolences on being in Illinois. I say that because I am born and bred and practicing in Illinois...southern Ill right now. anywho, I'm sending you a contact recruiter PM. she has been very helpful to me in scoping out jobs. she also can network w/i the recruiters. Now she's been looking for Psych jobs for me, but I'm sure she can give you some guidance or job locations. it's okay to tell her "Alberta" sent you. HI Alberta Thanks for the note. I would greatly appreciate any referrals, even as a source to network with them! I can understand you not wanting to share their cell phone #’s, if you have email addresses and are comfortable sharing them, I could just send a brief note sharing some details. Greatly appreciate it. Again the best to you, and I will check in from time to time. ENJOY! packster
I got a job (part time) at a local ER. Per diem position where I'll be making $50/hr. I've sent all of the required paperwork for credentialing. I hope to get temporary priveleges so that I can start working soon. Thanks for all of the support and great advice. andohert
Glad you've found something. If you're still looking, try Googling the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network. When I was looking about 18 months ago, I got a few leads from the recruiter there. If you're in the north central area, I may have some other ideas for you in this area- I live in DeKalb and work in Rockford.

Thanks again I really appreciate all the advice. If you can't move then try applying for contingent or locum positions, these accomplish three things 1. paycheck, 2. Gain experience, 3. May lead to a position either turning into a FT or through networking. Shadowing a PA isn't going to do much for you as you are a PA. Networking try becomeing more active in State's PA org. My employer has always come to me and asked "we have a PA opening in .... do you know anyone?" Send you CV to all your PA classmates and let them know you are still available if they know of a position. As far as what you've been doing since graduating.....well after preparing for and passing the PANCE you took some much needed time for yourself to decompress....right? Good Luck
