Guest gators2010 Posted February 22, 2009 Share Posted February 22, 2009 Im not sure whether or not the prerequisites for applying to AA school are intended to be tricky but they definitely have me confused. So, if there is anyone that is in AA school or has completed it and can give me advice, please do. My issue is with the required courses. They have almost all of the same prerequs as PA school aside from biochemistry, physics, and calculus. Now, if you look at the prerequisites they all require only ONE semester of organic chemistry but also require ONE semester of biochemistry. The problem is that, at least at my university, in order to take biochemistry you have to complete both semesters of organic chemistry. Is it like this just here or everywhere else too? Is there anyway to take biochem without another semester of organic? Thats all that I have for now. AA seems like a neat program if your into anesthesiology and its cool that at Emory you can still apply for it after your a PA incase you learn of an extreme interest you may have in the field. Prospective PA Posted February 22, 2009 Share Posted February 22, 2009 each school is different in their pre reqs although there are manyh that are similar. Most biochem courses do require 2 sem. of O chem...but not all...try your local CC. You can either take one semester of o chem and an online bio or take both ochems. The thing is when schools set pre-reqs they arent looking at what the pre-reqs are for those pre-reqs....they only care that you have what you need. now if you need to 13 other courses just to have that one pre-req then thats what you have to do. i have the same issue. A school Im looking at requires the same and my professor wont give me an override to take biochem without ochem2 so I think Im going to take it online. I think my professor here is going to give me the OK to take it without ochem2 but I found a site you can use to take biochem that students who are in AA school told me worked for them. Ive done ALOT of research the past few days and aside from those annoying CRNA people who constantly keep bashing the AA, the research is paying off. I really am liking the idea of an AA more and more. Just today I ran into an anesthesiologist during his, and my, lunchbreak who works at the hospital at my university and I asked him whether there were AA's and if I could shadow and he was very happy to hear me asking about it! So dont read too much into the mumbo jumbo about AA's not being accepted in healthcare by other people it is CRAP. Goodluck on your application process and all of that. No not limiting at all....if I thought it was then I wouldnt think that way..... Sure they arent all bashing but when I speak about bashing Im also speaking of those who make the comments "oh why go that route when you can do what Im doing" "oh by why choose that career....youre so smart" as if you have to be dumb to do the other careers I consider sly comments to be bashing also and have experience ALOT of that. Anywho even if I didnt experience bashing I still wouldnt ask one profession about another unless that person held both titles....maybe its just me--- just because a plumber and an electrician work to build a house together would you ask an electrician what its like to be a plumber? I would hope not..... The best way to learn about a career is to speak to those who work in that area and why? Because they know the job and asking anyone else is a great way to become misinformed. From talking to her and other CRNAs over the last few years, come to think about it ever since the first AA school was started, they have felt threatened. CRNAs seem very political, and consider this area their turf. They cannot prescribe, but some do work in a plastics office with the surgeon supplying the meds. It might be a good idea to research job opportunities in the are of the country where you want to work and find out who is hiring. Is it an anesthesiology group thats independent of the hospital or the hospital signs the cheek? A group might be easier to work with om getting a job. You could also do the pre-op H&P, post op in the PACU. Be aware there are people that will resent you becoming an AA.
