Prescription monitoring program for potential hire?

Wondering what the legal / ethical stance is on running a potential new hire (PA/NP/MD) through the drug prescription monitoring program? 

 

I've heard of this being done, but IMO a urine drug screen would be more ethical and less invasive...

Absolutely not ethical. Absolutely illegal. Absolutely and expressly prohibited by the attestation you sign to gain access to the database and in fact, in SC the PMP reminds you of this fact when you sign in.

Read the fine print. DO NOT DO IT.

If someone in your practice is doing this there are some very serious ethical concerns.
