holden
Many programs I am looking list Medical Terminology as a prerequisite. Most say that online is acceptable and that it only needs to be one credit. I have not taken such a class, but have a semester's worth of classes for an EMT-Basic license. Even if EMTs are specifically for pre-hospital care, in my mind it seems like this should be a sufficient substitute; however, I understand that when programs are sorting through tens of thousands of applicants they'll easily toss aside an app that didn't follow directions. In the Program Materials section of CASPA, they allow you to choose the classes that fulfill a program's listed prerequisites. Does anyone know how it would look to an admissions council if I listed my three classes and 11 hours of EMS credit as my Medical Terminology prereq?Thank you! fishbum
I can't imagine that working out well for you...EMT has a little medical terminology in it, but it barely scratches the surface. As usual, it's probably best to check with individual programs for a solid answer. I understand that when programs are sorting through tens of thousands of applicants they'll easily toss aside an app that didn't follow directions. I think you might be on to something there. Disciple3
Just take it online somewhere, its 1 credit. As a Paramedic I literally got it done in one night since I knew all the terms, just took the tests.
AliB
If you decide to apply to additional programs, you will encounter many that require it be 3 credit hours ... Jus' sayin'!
Disciple3
Which places would those be? I haven't even seen a 3cr terminology course around. In any case yeah you have to research what your schools want.

You already know the most important point - research the school directly! I looked and I now know that 3 of the schools where I applied no longer require medical terminology as a pre req. :) (reminding me yet again that programs do change and evolve) University of South Alabama still requires 2 credit hours. I took the course for 3 credit hours at a local 2-yr college that has multiple programs in health care. So, it wasn't too costly. There were at least two such colleges in the area. Disciple3
Was just wondering because I havent seen any. I've done thorough research on about 30some schools but I guess there are plenty more. I just haven't seen the class offered like that
GreatChecko
Would be awesome if this worked out, but unfortunately, no. Just find an online course somewhere and take it. Plus, I am an EMT and the vocabulary just isn't the same, you will gain something from the vocab course. KED Splint vs choledocolythiasis... tavenne323
One school I was going to apply to wanted all the prerequisites done in the last 10 years. I took Med Term in 2004. Even though I work at a hospital and use med term everyday when charting, they still wanted me to retake it. I crossed them off my list. If a school requires it, you have to take it to be considered. JetéToPA
I took Med. Terminology at Adirondack Community College in NY state for 3 credits, online. It's an easy course, but yeah it's a bummer that you have to spend 3+ months on it.
holden
Doug, Disciple, Ali, and everyone - Thanks so much for your inputs and discussion. The consensus seems clear: don't get fancy on your application and try to substitute EMT classes for med terminology. Just enroll in a 1-credit-hr online class. Even if some or even much of it is review, I imagine it's a good primer before starting PA school.

GreatChecko, your post is particularly poignant for me, because my question was in specific regards to UF's PA program - which would be my top choice. On UF's website they offer an admissions' email, do you know if there's a way to contact an admissions' counselor by phone or set up an in-person meeting? GreatChecko
Unfortunately, they are a tad busy to be able to set up phone appointments or appointments in general. If you want some face to face time, I highly recommend going to one of the info sessions in the Spring. Lots of time with students and the Admissions Director. Glorious_Ignoramus
Ask the schools your interested in. I've had good luck with this so far, and able to increase my number of applications from 3 to 7 by emailing admissions departments last year about a similar issue pertaining to my military training and a/p requirements.
