Is this a good offer for someone with no derm experience?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I have recently been offered a derm position and would like some feedback as whether or not to go for it?

Disclaimer: I have no derm experience and have only had 4 months experience of ortho. Kind of new grad but not really.

Salary: Starting 100k with a promised raise after a year depending on performance/production

Hours: 40-45 hrs a week. 5 days a week including 2-3 weekend days.

Benefits: health insurance fully covered, 2 wks PTO after a year of employment, profit sharing

Initially I will see patients with the SP, but after 2-3 weeks, I can start to see patients on my own with gradual progression to more autonomy. The job also requires me to travel to 2 different offices. 15-20 min drive for both.

Thanks for any feedback. Much obliged.

you should receive a minimum of two weeks vacation from the get go. You are supossed to work a full year straight without vacation? Seriously? Even PGY1 residents get two weeks vacation. I wouldn't take less than three weeks but other than that it sounds like a decent package w/ great earning potential. Make sure you have malpractice, tail coverage, CME, 401k etc included in package as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Seems like good offer, I would ask for vacation though as well as ask about possibility of CME and I assume the profit sharing is put into a 401k (that is how ours works).  If you are working 40 plus hours you deserve those benefits.  Derm seems to be a tough field to get into if you are really interested I would take it as long as they agree on some vacation time.

to me that sounds like a fair offer, not good but fair, the only thing I dont like the the vacation issue, I agree with some of the statement above that derm is really hard to get into and pretty much a high paying field along with cardiovascular/cardiothorasic.

fixed that for you. I think EM ranked first in the last salary survey, but it always goes between EM, CT surgery, Neurosurgery, and derm, depending on how many folks fill out surveys from each field in any given year.
