GatorRRT
I'm not located in Oregon, but do practice CC; this seems like a fairly strong offer. Their expectations for patient load are fairly realistic starting out. Do you have any relevant previous HCE? Functioning as a CC provider has quite a step learning curve, with no margin for error, even with close supervision. I'd honestly avoid it fresh out of school w/o previous RT/RN/Paramedic experience. Of course, YMMV.
MediMike
Was a primary response paramedic for about 5 years with some critical care transports experience mixed in. EMT for about a decade prior to that. Joined the SCCM, got Marino's and have subscribed to about every podcast out there. Appreciate the feedback, and more than willing to take any advice you've got! Administrator rev ronin Posted June 28, 2015 Administrator Share Posted June 28, 2015 I agree, that offer sounds pretty reasonable, in general terms.
bike mike
ICU is a tough gig for a new grad. How long would your close supervision be?
MediMike
Wouldn't expect to be quasi-independent until about 6 months out.
bike mike
Read Marino's. Read every day. You will have a lot to learn. Good luck....if you have the right mind set you will love critical care.
GatorRRT
Assuming no, but are there any residents at this site?
MediMike
Practically sleep with Marino. He's one opinionated dude isn't he? And that's a big negatory to the resident question. They only have one PA who came in with a decent amount of experience, are eager to train procedure wise.
GatorRRT
Sounds like a primo opportunity then if you think critical care is for you. Agree with Marino, I'd also add the obvious Uptodate. As for podcasts, my favorite so far is EMCrit, yet another opinionated dude there. Finding a nonresident shop is also a nice bonus when in comes to focusing on procedures, taking on more complex patients etc. Another question to consider about the offer: any call requirements? MediMike
No call! Kind of threw me on that one, but they have dedicated nocturnists for the unit. The lack of residents is pretty big, while it's nice to have more folks to learn from I'm pretty tired of fighting for procedures/patients after this last year.
