What is your school's PAEA EOR Passing Score?

Recommended Posts

Ive had the pleasure of running into a few PA students from other programs while on my rotations and learned that everyone has their own minimum score for the same exam to be considered passing.

My question to you who take the PAEA EOR exams is, what does your school require you to achieve for a passing grade for these exams?

Thanks in advance!

Crazy! That's the opposite I've been seeing from other programs.

There is a program in CA that requires a 50% to pass. Another one in Colorado that requires a 60%

My school requires a raw score of 70% to pass. We also remediate as seen fit by our program director of we don't pass it. I love taking the PAEA EORs. Feel the questions are fair, with the occasional poorly written question that you're assuming must be one of the 20 that is being tried out / doesn't count.

The exam accounts for 35% of our rotation grade which we need an 80% to pass the rotation. This is in addition to turning in a clinical write up, graded soap note, completing assigned questions from the challenger question bank, turning in our patient logs / competencies, and lastly our preceptor evaluation.

Since the EOR exams were started the school has had a curve, that has been reduced year over year, that is added onto the score. Passing score is 70%, with remediation for failures as well, up to and including losing an elective and redoing the rotation. The reasoning was that as the years went on the test would normalize to the level of knowledge of students were during the clinical year, with the curb eventually going to 0.

There is no curve on didactic exams and the passing score is the same.

PANCE pass rates have remained very strong, so something tells me that other than just being CBT practice, the passing score really doesn't correlate and it has to do more with didactics and other intangibles.

Honestly, I like the EORs, because it ensures that you are tested on PANCE blueprint items and not some random topic that isn't important to clinical practice.

How much do they curve it? What would your raw score be that would be equivalent to a passing curved score?

I don't think I can post exact numbers, but it started at 10 points and has gone down from there in subsequent years. It's in the range of 5 now. Thus the raw passing score is near 65.

First class for our program and our PAEA EOR exam minimum is 60%. I fully expect this to go up in subsequent years. That exam counts for 45% of our rotation grade, evaluation- 40% and other documentation, pt logs, etc make up the other 15%.

The exams do seem fair and test knowledge needed for practice and PANCE. Internal medicine has been my least favorite exam thus far, but it was also my first one.

First class here as well.. We are required to have a score of 75 or higher to pass which makes up 30% of our grade, then preceptor eval 40%, specific assignments (soap note, board practice question pack, case study and grand rounds presentation or practical depending on rotation) 15%, pt log/admin/evals 15%

We can re-mediate the PAEA EOR once if unsuccessful again -> redo rotation. Minimal passing grade of 3.0.

Is there seriously a school in CA that allows passing with a 50%?! Amazing.

75% raw score seems pretty harsh lol.

And I was shocked as well when I learned this program had a 50% raw score passing requirement. I won't mention the program.. But I thought I had misheard what they said initially.. So I asked again a few hours later and that's what they stated.. Got it confirmed as well from another student from that program that I encountered at another rotation as well.

That being said, that program has a 97% first time PANCE pass rate, so they must be doing something right...

Program I am at uses the national first time test taker's mean score and standard deviation to determine a local score.

A is mean or above, B one SD < mean, C two SD < mean, etc.

Essentially a program can do whatever it wants including not comparing to national data.

If a program feels the EORE are worthwhile, they could take the scores from several cohorts and instead of using the mean, use the median to find the true 50% point locally. Then arrange numerical score around that ie local median is a B, use local standard deviations to determine As and Cs. Most programs wont pass a C student. But it all depends upon the statistical outlook of the program and whether the mean is more worthwhile than the median.

The program can also use this as a way to ratchet up standards. It all is based upon the fact that when taking EORE or PANCE, the test taker is compared to peers, either locally or nationally. If the local peers are better than the national peers, passing the PANCE is a forgone conclusion. So being held to a higher standard will pay off.

We need an 80% to pass and our exam is worth 70% of our rotation grade. If we get anything below a 70% on the PAEA EOR exam we have to repeat it and we fail that repeat rotation. My program is relatively new (first class 2011). Last year they were giving huge curves (+20) but this year we started at 10 first rotation, 3,2 and nothing after that ????
