What are my chances?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am looking into applying to the program for 2016 and just wanted to see if any alumni had an opinion on my Grades and HCE for the program.  I am 23 and from San Diego.

Anatomy: B

Physiology: B

Micro: B

English 100: A

Psychology: A

Sociology: B

Statistics: B

Intro Chem :B

For my HCE I have 4,000 hours working as an ER Tech and an additional 3,500 hours working as a Lifeguard EMT for the fire department.  As an ER tech I work directly with PAs with patient treatment and procedures and could basically get as many LOR as the school would be willing to read. II am also applying for Nursing school as a back up but I am curious if I have a competitive application or not.

Any input is much appreciated.

Hello! welcome to the forum.

Not an alum of Stanford SoM PA Program so take my advice with a grain of salt. Your HCE is above average which will work in your favor. Your pre-req GPA I'm assuming falls above the 3.0 minimum. That said, what is your cGPA and sGPA?

Any community service? Extra curricula activities; sports, volunteerism, and or medical mission trips? All of these play a role in your application.

Good luck

My sGPA is a 3.0 with my cGPA at 3.2 for my Associates in Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Math and Science.  I do not have a Bachelors degree which really limits the schools I can apply to. So far I only know of Stanford, Pacific and Moreno Valley (which is now on Accreditation-Probation).  Unfortunately I have no volunteer work or medical trips since I have been working full-time to pay for my schooling...

I'm an alum and agree with umbPA

Sent from my S5 Active...Like you care...

I don't have any volunteer work as mentioned but I was going to stress my HCE being done in underserved communities.  I will be attending one of the information sessions this week because there a handful of them taking place in the San Diego area.

I'm applying for the 2016 start;

I have an A in the Anatomy and Physiology sequence (12 credit, year long, 3 quarter classes)

A in Microbiology

B in statistics

B in chemistry

A in English 1A, B in English 1B (retaking this summer, but will not be completed before the August 17th deadline)

A in sociology

B in general psychology, (also retaking this summer but will be completed after the August 17th deadline)

I was a 91/68W in the Army National Guard for eight years, with two deployments for full time hours, and have worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant for the VA for the last year and a half. I'm having difficulty translating my time into how many direct patient care hours I have from the Army; a lot of my time was spent on combat patrols, but before any modifiers I have about 8,000 hours of DPC.

As a teenager I volunteered with the local police department with their Explorer program, early in my college years I volunteered at an emergency homeless shelters for two winters, and after deployment to Iraq I started an online community for veterans where we provide peer support and assistance in navigating the VA health care system and benefits administration.

When the admissions team calculates GPA, are they looking at the prerequisites, or the total GPA of the transcripts? I have a couple of bad spots on my transcripts due to not being able to drop on time and the school refusing to work with me around my national guard obligations that I'm worried about.

Thanks for any insight.

You are very young. I would not choose nursing school as a back up if PA school is your first choice. If you don't get in, continue to grind to boost up your application. This is a job that you will mostlikely be doing for most of your life. A one year delay is nothing compared to having to wake up every day reminding yourself that you should of done PA.

Is it worth applying this cycle (2015-2016) if I am below on the 3,000 hour HCE requirement? I have roughly 2,000 right now, which I got working as a medical scribe during the past year. I also don't have all of the prerequisite coursework completed yet. I will be taking Anatomy & Physiology II this fall, so I will be done with my prereqs come December. I also never took a Microbiology lab...the Microbiology course I took last summer did not offer it. My overall GPA is 3.73 and my science GPA is just under a 4.0. Thoughts??
