I have practiced in Ortho, Inpt PM&R and Urgent Care since graduating in 2000. I work in all of these areas congruently, running an Ortho Urgent Care (W2 employee) and contract in PM&R & UC thru my S-Corp for past 8yrs. Lots of work available in my area for PA with right experience and business approach. Secret is finding your nitch in the market place and dont be afraid to let potential contracts know what you can provide to their practices. I find physicians/CEO's tend to respond favorably if they see the confidence in your own abilities.

I feel PA is a good profession to move into hospital leadership. I feel with the MD degree time spent in education and specialization hospital leadership is not the best way to utilize those resources. PAs practice medicine but do not necessarily have business/financial acumen or leadership/organizational skills so many will need to take additional coursework. Who better to lead a hospital than someone who knows the challenges of patient care delivery like a PA ? I wonder if certificate courses could be an option over MBA/MPH. Many top business and public health schools offer these week long certificate programs which seem interesting/tempting.

I see PA and the understanding it gives us of human behavior/development could be powerful asset in numerous professional arenas. Also, health consulting and biotech financial services are other avenues for PAs which are rarely taken advantage of.

I have little interest in this but I always thought one potential small business per diem idea for a PA would be patient liaison. Affluent clients could pay the PA 150/hr to provide review of TR and facilitate conversation between specialists. Just an idea.

Saw a REAL interesting business by two NPs which work for NP and PA schools to find and train clinical rotation sites. Could see something like this being useful.

I'm an Orthopedic PA in sports medicine. Would love to find some gigs as a sport event PA (ie dealing with sprains, strains, etc). Thinking of registering a business name to get going. Any advice?

Remember that under current PA rules - you cannot do this alone - you have to have an MD/DO as a supervising physician.

If you open a business as the owner you must employ a doctor to be the supervising physician.

Don't get yourself into a situation where you are out of bounds.

Meddeb, when Reality says you need a supervising physician, that is someone you can pay a set monthly fee or develop another type of arrangement with. But like she said, be aware of the situation you are getting yourself into. However there are hundreds of PAs that have developed that kind of financial relationship with a supervising doc.
