ktcan10
This is something that I am researching for my capstone project. I'm interested in the role that physician assistants have in prehospital medicine, which I think is a really exciting way to help mitigate ER overcrowding and help manage chronic medical problems. http://blumenfield.lacity.org/pressrelease_041415 Los Angeles is in the process of creating a unit similar to those in Mesa, Arizona or Littleton, CO. However, they've titled it the "Nurse Practitioner Unit", which I find to be startling and very disappointing, especially considering the pilot units that are currently operating almost universally with physician assistants. If you have the drive, the above link takes you to the council member's website, where you can contact him or request a meeting with him. Perhaps someone with connections to CAPA?? SoCalPA
I would like to talk to you about this. I think there is still time to get PAs included. It doesn't make sense to only have NPs respond to these your of calls. Well PM you.

Davo
Nurses have their hands in everything EMS in California. I'd be surprised if the nursing interests would allow it to even operate if otherwise.

CA is one of the few places in the country where RNs can direct medics in the field without md involvement...
grapegurl
I was taking my toddler to a local fire station for a tour, and they mentioned this program to me, and specifically mentioned PA's being hired for it. Would love to hear more information about it!
SoCalPA
I hope so!!! Much rather have it called the "advanced care unit" or the "urgent care unit" but definitely not the "nurse practitioner unit". I get so sick of everything being NP this or NP that.
grapegurl
They mentioned it would be a PA and an EMS captain....not sure what kinds of complaints, etc, they would see. And how do they "get" patients? I didn't quite understand the model but definitely applaud new and inventive ways to use PA's
