Value of Residency if not in Area of Practice? e.g. CC for Hospitalist?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I was wondering how valuable a residency in CC or EM would be for a position outside of that practice? I ideally would love to work in those areas, but my home state doesn't employ PAs in those capacities (on the road system anyway!).  The only currently available positions in commuting distance of where I live are in cardiology and as a hospitalist. I would be happy with both those jobs, but am really holding out for the hospitals/physician groups up here to start hiring PAs in the main ER and CC. So while I know whether or not it is "worth it" is largely personal based on a lot of factor, does it make sense? What would be everyone's suggestions about how transferable the skillsets are/increase in wage/bargaining ability?
