Housing Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has any housing suggestions.  I emailed admissions and they gave me a couple suggestions and told me to access a webinar via MySalus but I haven't received my user name yet and I was hoping to get a jump start on things.

I'm from the Detroit area so I'm very unfamiliar with Elkins Park and the surrounding cities.  We're open to rentals (home or apartment) but also open minded when it comes to buying if it's right for us.  So any suggestions on areas and apartment complexes/communities would be wonderful.

Looking forward to meeting everyone in August.

I heard that the Towers and Wyncote House are solid choices, from the posts by current students. There were also some recommendations on Brookview apartments. Someone mentioned that Lynewood Apartments is in a sketchy area, and not the safest option.

If you want more insight, feel free to join our facebook group! We have current students on board who have talked about some housing options : https://www.facebook.com/groups/822818301114999/

I went to a different program in the Philly area but lived less than a mile from the Salus campus for a number of years.  I'm pretty familiar with the area.

Do not, under any circumstances, live in Lynnewood Gardens.  Just don't do it.  I'd also avoid Oak Summit Apartments.

Apartment complexes in that area aren't very common.  It's old, suburban residential.  There are some houses that have been converted to apartments and are available to rent.  There are houses available, also.  There are a couple of condo buildings in the area, some not too far from the Salus campus with condos rented out by their owners.  I rented a condo in a complex called Beaver Hill Condos.  I'd live there again in a heartbeat.  One of my neighbors was also a Salus student in their Optometry program.

Glenside isn't a bad town.  With Arcadia right there there are some housing options.  Abington isn't far and is a nice area.  Elkins Park is hit or miss.  Jenkintown isn't bad.  Aside from the housing discussions on your class FB page I found the places I lived through Craigslist.

I'd avoid living close to the Montgomery County/Philadelphia border (Cheltenham Avenue if you're looking at a map).  The further north from the border you get the better your options.  North Philly is not a nice place.  Lynnewood Gardens is right off Cheltenham Ave.  Do NOT live in Lynnewood Gardens.

If you have questions about the area PM me.

Lastly, do NOT live in Lynnewood Gardens.

also avoid park lane east appts. we need a neighbor there who did band practice every night, refused to stop, and the management made US relocate to a new appt rather than him despite the fact we had to call the police multiple times, etc. We also had no hot water for 6 months.

Took a lawyer to break our lease without penalties.

ended up living in Lansdowne (W of W philly) right off the R3 train line. easy commute to downtown.

It was a nice place.  The condo I rented was in good shape and recently renovated.  Rent was appropriately priced.  It was a 5 minute walk from my front door to the Jenkintown SEPTA station.  The guy from whom I rented was pretty cool, too.  He was very reasonable as a landlord.

I looked at a bunch of places in that area.  Most of them were pretty nice.  The big selling point to this place was the train station being so close as it allowed easy access to downtown.

  • 5 weeks later...

For anyone familiar with the Salus' schedule or just a PA school schedule in general, how inconvenient would it be to live downtown?  My boyfriend is in law school at Villanova, so we are trying to find a place that won't be too inconvenient for either of us.  The commute would probably be about 45 minutes, but at least we could use the time on the train to study. I'd also have access to his car for days when a train schedule would be inconvenient. He is willing to live near Salus if I think the commute will be too much. Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated.
