Ortho Job..sending salary requirements?

Recommended Posts

Alright, I had a question here. The job I'm looking at is in ortho, suburbs of Philadelphia. The ad on their website has a very brief description of "first assisting during surgery and pre/post op office care." It says to send resume and "salary requirements" to human resources.

My question is....what is acceptable to put down for this? I am a new grad. I am very hesitant to put anything down since I honestly don't know. Should I definitely put a number down or could I just say something like "salary negotiable" and just hope they throw out a number first (if I were to even get an interview)? I have data from the AAPA stating salary for a new grad ortho PA in pennsylvania is about $72,500. I am figuring that number has increased by another thousand or two since they gathered the data. I thought if anything, I would put this down.

What do you think I could put down? I wish I had more info about the job like hours/patients/benefits but I don't. Thanks.

Hi there,

I am not a PA so take that into consideration. Though I do have yrs of experience negotiating employment contracts. At first glance the # looks low to me. Secondly, it doesn't appear to me that you have enough information about the job to commit to a #. They would only use that to lock you in. I recommend that you leave it open. Say something like "Interested in negotiating a fair compensation. However, more information is needed before i can calculate an accurate salary". I don't think that's unreasonable. It leaves the door open. If they are reasonable they should accept that. I mean you don't wanna take less money and be unhappy and they don't want you to feel unfairly treated cuz you'll end up being less productive. At least that is my opinion. I hope that helps. Let us know how it works out.

Most recent info I have seen confirms what you stated (new grads in ortho start at an average of $72,500), but I'd ask for the upper limit which is $82,500 (or $90k if you think you're worth it - just make sure your CV reflects it). Shoot high, let them negotiate you down if you're ok with that. I'm going through negotiations at the moment as a new grad myself... Aiming for the fences and trying to get some middle ground. Don't forget: your benefits package should total about 25% of your salary (so about $20k worth of bennies). Hope that helps (PM me if you have any more questions).
