Why do you want to become a PA?

Recommended Posts

This is the ONE question that you are sure to be asked by every school. In fact, you will be asked this multiple times and by multiple interviewers. And they way you answer might determine whether or not you are accepted.

It follows that there is NO excuse for being caught off guard. And you better have a darn good answer.

So let’s tackle this question together.

Please read more from my blog post on this topic and let me know your thoughts!

I'm not a huge fan of canned answers to interview questions. As an interviewer, they seem as stale as they are. You've got a few minutes to come across as a unique person, rather than just another applicant who has checked the boxes.

Without a doubt, you need to know why you are applying. It certainly can have an altruistic core (like helping people or because you once had a PA help you or whatever), but that should be mixed with enough experience (from HCE, shadowing, etc) that it also has some realism as to what the working world is really like for a PA.

So know why you are doing what you are doing, but don't memorize an answer. Be who you really are, just maybe on a little better behavior than usual!

Good luck!

The purpose of this article was to steer people away from the "canned answers". The last thing you should do is prepare a speech to answer an interview question. Hopefully my post leads people to do some genuine self reflection on why they are interested in becoming a PA. That way when when they are in the interview, it will sound as though they have given some serious thought about the profession.
