Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 9, 2014 Moderator Share Posted December 9, 2014 ^^^wow, that's brilliant. several programs already do that for just that reason. a few even require passage of the CAQ as an exit exam.
YaleEM
We are planning on an initial class of two residents per year. The 18 months allows for greater opportunities to have a wide variety of off-service rotations, while still having a substantial amount of ED time. A large percentage of the 2nd year ED rotations will be spent in our separate critical care/resuscitation section of the ED. As EMED mentioned, the plan is for the graduates to meet all eligibility requirements for the CAQ in emergency medicine. PGY-1 salary will be $58,500, going up to $60,700 during PGY-2. Residents will be YNHH employees, with the same benefits package as our staff PA's (medical/dental/disability/life, malpractice, TSA retirement plan, CME allowance). The program will also include ACLS, PALS, and ATLS.

Soulfari
In regards to application time-frame vs graduation date, what is the best course of action? Example: If I am to graduate from my program in May 2016 and wish to pursue a residency, when is the best time to get started on the App and compiling necessary paperwork? Residents will need to be NCCPA certified and state licensed prior to the beginning of the residency program. If you want to e-mail one of the program faculty with your specific details we can help you further if needed.
Moderator ventana Posted December 29, 2014 Moderator Share Posted December 29, 2014 hats off think this is a great thing.... I would have done it as a new grad, especially with the office service rotations as that is what you miss with OJT, and what really helps when the going gets tough...... YaleEM
Is there much competition for procedures with the MD residents? Do the PAs and MDs work side by side? The staff PA's currently work side by side with the MD residents, and have a great working relationship. Our MD residency director was a career army doctor who worked extensively with EMPA residents through the military, so he is completely supportive of the new program. Looking at the current procedures for the MD residents, they already have the opportunity to perform twice as many procedures as required by ACGME, so there aren't many worries about competing for patients and procedures. Our residents will also be rotating at two other ED's within the system that do not have EM residents (attending/PA coverage), in which case there is no worry about competition. Interviews are planned for February 4th (as REMPAC knows!). Applicants who are interested in pursuing an interview should submit their CV and cover letter within the next week or so. Two letters of recommendation are also required prior to the interview. The state of CT does offer a training permit for PA residents, so it is possible to begin the program prior to passing your PANCE (with the expectation that you obtain full licensure and your PA-C ASAP). Feel free to contact any of the faculty with your specifics and we can chat about your timeline.

YaleEM
Not too many answers on this thread. Sorry SoCal; we do our best to monitor the thread, but as you can likely imagine we've been pretty hectic getting everything set up for the new program. The best bet for anyone with specific questions is to contact the program directly.
