Go get your seat in the class!

Just as I am curious

How many apply for how many seats?

Good question. I remain hopeful about the outcomes of these programs' veteran recruitment efforts: University of South Alabama, Midwestern University, Northern Arizona University, Georgia Health Sciences University Research Institute Inc., Bay Path College, University of North Dakota, University of Nebraska, Pacific University, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio, Eastern Virginia Medical School, University of Washington. Can anyone share?

Recently graduated from UW/Medex and we had the largest cohort of Veterans in school history in my class. Close to 40% I think, and continues to have the highest percentage of vets than any other program I believe. And they've increased recruitment presence at the local bases near the school and in the region. Makes for a good atmosphere/rivalry in class amongst the services.

It's great to hear that there are schools who proactively recruit veterans. Of the 42 in my class, there were 10 men, four of us were veterans (1 retired, 2 reserve, 1 relad). We also had four ladies who were still active reservists, so about 18% of our class were veterans.

However the faculty always seemed to be uncomfortable with us veterans. They were much more comfortable interacting with the 23 yo young lady right out of undergrad than the 30 year old army Captain with combat experience as a company commander, the 26 year old FMF corpsmen, or the 40 year old retired BMCS.

For those vets getting into civilian PA programs, remember you are entering ACADEMIA, where your military background/experience/etiquette/personality may not be appreciated. For much of the liberal elite who reside in academia, the military is the enemy.

If your program doesn't participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, they may not be the most military friendly. It may be a good idea for vets/AD who are interested in becoming PAs to start by looking at programs who have a strong military history (MEDEX, DUKE, George Washington, UNC) or those with large military populations nearby (UTSA, E. Virginia, etc.), and especially those who participate in the YRP.
