SoCalPA
Can someone shed a bit of light on the difference between an EM Residency and a Critical Care Residency? Is Critical Care more like a Trauma residency? Just trying to figure out the differences. They seem very similar to me. If you do a CC residency would that also prepare you to work in EM? Would someone hiring for an EM position recognize and respect the training/experience gained from an CC residency? Is it true that a residency can be viewed as equivalent of approx 3 yrs experience? I'm only now applying to PA Programs but thinking about the future. Just thinking a residency might be worth it for negotiating higher salary, more confidence and more job opportunities. Thoughts? SoCalPA
Also, are Fellowships and Residencies pretty much the same thing?
Moderator EMEDPA Posted October 27, 2014 Moderator Share Posted October 27, 2014 yes, same thing. EM is more about initial dx, tx, and stabilization while critical care is about keeping them alive after the first hour using technology like vents, etc. lots of overlapping skills. Lots of folks think of a 1 yr residency as equivalent to five years at a really good job. EM positions would certainly be open to folks with critical care skills and vis versa. SoCalPA
Thanks EMEDPA. Good to know. 5 yrs for 1 year of training with a good mentor in a safe environment is definitely worth it. I'm looking forward to a residency/fellowship.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted October 27, 2014 Moderator Share Posted October 27, 2014 also residency grads get their pick of top jobs. we just hired one and have her working solo at our satellite facility her 1st month. Other folks need to prove themselves for 1-2 years before we consider it. I actually expect her to get bored and leave within a year or 2 because the acuity at our satellite facility, while potentially significant, is not consistently high acuity. I have worked there for over ten years now, but have other high acuity/low volume jobs to keep me from getting bored.
Chazilla
I'm not a PA, however, I do work in the critical care setting and also ED. EM residency is mainly situated in the emergency room; while critical care would be your surgical/neuro/cardiovascular intensive care units. The PAs at my hospital work in either the ER or CVICU, There is actually a PA critical care residency offered, which I hope to attend when and if I am successful in my attempts to become a PA. Annika
I have done EM medicine (at a great level 1 trauma hospital with great docs) for a year, UC with jack for supervision for a year while looking to get hired in Co- a VERY hard state to get started in! and finally am now am doing pulmonology critical care with great docs as the first PA. I wish I knew more, and am not busy enough to be learning. That MAY change.... Am thinking hospitalist CAQ but if there was a good residency program, I might pick my a** up and do it.
