Changing jobs as a new grad

Recommended Posts

I've been working about 6 months in Primary/Urgent Care. I am getting little pay, little benefits, and not even a full 40 hour workweek ( I work 32 hrs/wk). I would like to move on but I feel like it is too early. In addition, the practice is currently transitioning to EMR so I would feel bad throwing a new PA into the mix when they are investing all this time training me and what not. However, I know I need to look out for myself and I can't make everyone happy.

So I have a couple of job opportunities currently.

#1 In home health assesments for Medicare (AKA physicals). MD wants full-time but would consider part-time transition to full-time. PROS: $20 more per hour pay! and bonuses; travel (I like to drive around); some days you are paid and don't have to work CONS: Most likely not the best learning experience for a new grad

#2 Per-diem General surgery job (my desired field of practice). No interview with them yet but they are contacting me about availability. This would be ideal to transition out of my current job.

Should I take the #1 position if offered if I could work only part-time so I still get the needed experience in primary/urgent care in my other position? If I do get the per-diem surgery job, I will be willing to drop one of the other jobs. Is it going to look bad to be bouncing around from job to job like this? Please help

how about talking to your current job and saying you want / need full time work and let them figure out what to do with you - give it another 6 months - then 1yr out you sort of are no longer a new grad and you won't have the stigma a job hopping - and if you have kept your current boss in the loop that you want more time and $$$ he can't blame you for leaving....

who knows maybe they will increase your pay and hours to keep you!
